Tîm Coleg Menai'n cyrraedd y brig yn yr Her Chwaraeon Moduro i Fyfyrwyr

Trawsnewidiodd myfyrwyr o'r adran peirianneg cerbydau modur Peugeot 107 yn gerbyd parod i'w rasio, a hwy hefyd oedd yn gofalu amdano dros ddau ddiwrnod y digwyddiad.

Achubodd y gyrrwr Hywel Rosenthal y blaen ar Goleg Gwent gan sicrhau mai Coleg Menai oedd y coleg cyflymaf o Gymru ar Drac Môn.

Yn awr mae myfyrwyr y cwrs BTEC Lefel 3 mewn Chwaraeon Moduro am godi arian i gystadlu yng ngweddill rasys y gyfres fydd yn cael eu cynnal ar draciau rasio eiconig fel Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Donington Park a Snetterton.

Roedd yr Her Chwaraeon Moduro i Fyfyrwyr yn rhan o Bencampwriaeth Cwpan CityCar, gyda thîm Chwaraeon Moduro Menai'n cystadlu yn erbyn 30 tîm arall mewn rownd ragbrofol a thair ras arall ar drac Tŷ Croes.

Gyda Hywel Rosenthal, perchennog garej Star Auto Care, Gaerwen, wrth y llyw daeth Chwaraeon Moduro Menai'n 18fed allan o 31 yn y rownd ragbrofol.

Yn ras un, llwyddodd y tîm i orffen yn safle 14, ond gan iddyn nhw fethu cwblhau ras dau oherwydd digwyddiad ar y trac roedd rhaid iddyn nhw ddechrau'r ras olaf o gefn y grid. Serch hynny, mi godon nhw 4 safle yn y sesiwn olaf gan orffen yn safle 24 yn gyffredinol.

Dyma oedd gan Hywel Rosenthal i'w ddweud ar ôl y digwyddiad: "Dim ond fy ail gyfarfod rasio oedd hwn, a dyma'r tro cyntaf i'r myfyrwyr a'r holl staff gystadlu, ond fe aeth popeth yn rhyfeddol o dda.

"Roedd y myfyrwyr yn gwybod i'r dim beth oedd angen ei wneud ac yn dda iawn wrth eu gwaith. Roedd proffesiynoldeb y staff a'r myfyrwyr heb ei ail, ac roedden ni'n gweithio'n dda iawn fel tîm.

"Roedd ein car ni'n sefydlog a chawson ni ddim problemau mawr. Yn wir, mae pawb yn haeddu canmoliaeth uchel. Mi lwyddon ni i aros yn y ras a gorffen fel y coleg uchaf yng Nghymru."

Dywedodd Arron Peel, Arweinydd Tîm Chwaraeon Moduro Menai a Dirprwy Reolwr y Maes Rhaglen Peirianneg yng Ngholeg Menai: "Am benwythnos ac am gyflawniad.

"Mae'r holl dîm Chwaraeon Moduro wedi rhoi llawer o amser ac ymdrech i'r rhaglen hon ac roedd gweld y car ar y trac yn wych. Ni oedd y coleg cyflymaf o Gymru ar y trac.

"Roedd yn braf siarad â'r cystadleuwyr eraill a chael cyfleoedd i rwydweithio â cholegau eraill o Brydain.

"Roedd yn brofiad eithriadol o dda ac yn agoriad llygad – roedd gan rai o'r timau lorïau enfawr, gazebos a thimau arlwyo. Mi wnaeth y staff a'r myfyrwyr fwynhau'r profiad yn fawr, ac mae 'na gryn edrych ymlaen at y cyfarfod rasio nesaf."

Bydd cyfarfodydd rasio nesaf Pencampwriaeth Cwpan CityCar yn Snetterton ar 22 a 23 Gorffennaf, ac yna yn Brands Hatch ar 19 a 20 Awst, Donington Park ar 9 a 10 Medi, a Silverstone ar 7 a 8 Hydref.

Motorsport engineering students transformed a Peugeot 107 into a race-ready vehicle, with the learners also providing the pit crew for the two-day event.

They secured the Welsh bragging rights, with driver Hywel Rosenthal beating off competition from Coleg Gwent to ensure Menai Motorsports finished as the top college from Wales at the Anglesey Circuit.

The team of BTEC Level 3 in Motorsport Engineering students now want to raise the cash to enter the remainder of the series, which would see them compete at iconic motorsport venues such as Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Donington Park and Snetterton.

The Student Motorsport Challenge was incorporated into the CityCar Cup Championship, which saw Menai Motorsports compete against 30 other teams over a qualifying round and three races at the Tŷ Croes track.

With Hywel, the owner of Star Autocare in Gaerwen, at the wheel, Menai Motorsports finished 18th out of 31 in the qualifying race.

In race one the team gained four places to finish 14th, but they were unable to complete the race due to an incident on the track, meaning they started the final race from the back of the grid. However, they picked up four places to finish 24th overall in the last session.

Hywel Rosenthal said afterwards: “It was only my second proper race meeting, and it was the students’ and all the staff’s first time at this, and it was exceptionally well done.

“The students were hands-on and everyone was very good at their job. The professionalism of the staff and the students was second to none, and as a team we worked very well.

“We had a car that was stable and we had no real issues, and everyone deserves a massive amount of praise. We managed to stay the course and finished as the top college in Wales.”

Arron Peel, Menai Motorsports team principal and Deputy Programme Manager for Engineering at Coleg Menai, said: “What a weekend and an achievement.

“The whole Motorsports team have put a lot of time and effort into this programme and to see the car out on track was amazing, the fastest Welsh College on track.

“It was nice speaking to other competitors and to have opportunities for networking with other colleges from across the UK.

“It was an extremely good experience and a real eye-opener - there were teams that turned up with massive articulated lorries, gazebos and catering teams. The staff thoroughly enjoyed it and so did the students, and we can’t wait for the next meeting.”

The next meeting in the CityCar Cup Championship is at Snetterton on July 22 and 23, before rounds at Brands Hatch on August 19 and 20, Donington Park on September 9 and 10, and Silverstone on October 7 and 8.
