Llwyddiant Cyn-fyfyriwr Chwaraeon a Thîm Rygbi Saith Bob Ochr

Mae cyn seren o academi rygbi Coleg Llandrillo wedi dychwelyd o Ganada ar ôl cynorthwyo tîm rygbi saith bob ochr Prydain i ddod yn ail yng Nghyfres Rygbi Saith Bob Ochr y Byd.

Dilynodd Morgan Williams, 25 oed o'r Felinheli, gwrs Diploma Estynedig BTEC Lefel 3 mewn Chwaraeon ar gampws y coleg yn Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, ac roedd yn un o'r ddau Gymro a ddewiswyd i'r garfan eleni.

Tîm De Affrica oedd yn fuddugol yn y gyfres wedi iddynt ennill y ddau ddigwyddiad a drefnwyd a chipio teitl Cyfres y Byd am y pedwerydd tro. Oherwydd effaith pandemig Covid-19 dim ond dau dwrnamaint a gynhaliwyd yn ystod cyfres 2021, yn Vancouver ac Edmonton, yn hytrach na'r deg sy'n digwydd fel arfer. Roedd y nifer o dimau hefyd yn llai, un deg chwech yn hytrach na deuddeg ym mhob twrnamaint.

Roedd Morgan yn aelod allweddol o garfan GB yn y gystadleuaeth ble rhannwyd y 12 tîm yn dri grŵp gan ddefnyddio'r un drefn â'r gemau Olympaidd. Roedd tîm GB yn grŵp B gyda Hong Kong, Iwerddon a Jamaica.

Ar ôl canlyniadau gwych yn y grŵp, enillodd GB yn erbyn UDA (21-19) ac yna curo Canada 22-12 i gyrraedd y rownd derfynol. Yn anffodus i Morgan a thîm GB, De Affrica enillodd y gêm honno 24-12.

25-year-old Morgan Williams - who is originally from Felinheli and studied on the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport course at the college’s Rhos-on-Sea campus - was one of only two members of the squad from Wales.

Eventually, South Africa came away victorious, winning both tour events on their way to claiming their fourth World Series title. Due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, only two tournaments - in Vancouver and Edmonton - were played in the 2021 series instead of the usual ten. The number of teams participating was also reduced from sixteen to twelve at the tournaments.

Morgan was a key member of the men’s GB squad for the competition, which saw 12 teams divided into three pools of four using the same format as the Olympics. GB Sevens were drawn in Pool B with Ireland, Hong Kong and Jamaica.

After an excellent pool stage, GB had a thrilling win over USA (21-19), followed by a 22-12 victory over Canada to reach the final. Unfortunately for Morgan and the GB team, South Africa ran out 24-12 winners in the final.
