Myfyriwr o'r Adran Adeiladu yn cipio teitl Prentis y Flwyddyn

Mae myfyriwr o adran Adeiladu Coleg Llandrillo a gynrychiolodd y DU mewn cystadleuaeth WorldSkills yn Rwsia llynedd, wedi cael ei enwi'n Brentis Plymio gorau'r DU!

Tom Thomas, 21 from Porthmadog - who is a Level 3 Plumbing and Heating student at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus - won the national 'HIP Apprentice of the Year 2020' competition. He was awarded £1,000, together with thousands of pounds worth of career-boosting industry tools as prizes. Coleg Llandrillo was also awarded £1,000.

Tom - who is employed by AER Cymru in Penrhyndeudraeth and attends the college on a day-release basis - beat off competition from two other talented plumbing and heating learners in the final, which had a revised format. The other two other finalists this year were Joseph Parkinson from University Academy Holbeach, Lincolnshire and Harry Pegler from South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, Bristol.

Dozens of competitors took part in seven regional heats between January and March across the country, before the lockdown caused the competition to be postponed. The seven regional winners completed a short online test and their scores were added to the regional test results. The top three competed in a one-day live final, at the same time, at their respective colleges.

Tom, who qualified for the UK final after winning the north west heat at Burnley College, said:

"The competition was great; it's fantastic to be named the best apprentice plumber in the UK. The final was a step-up from the regional heat - it was a challenge to get it done in time. It's an amazing thing to put on your CV - if I ever need to look for work in future, I can say I've done it and it'll give me a step up."

"It definitely increases your technical skills and gives you a focus on being accurate to the point of complete precision. You have to be confident in what you do and not second-guess yourself."

Tom's lecturer Chris Walling said he'd 'happily have Tom working in his house'. He added:

"Tom is an excellent practical student who is truly dedicated. He spent hours practising in his own time at home before the competition, which really paid off."

"He's great in college and when we visit him on site he's always confident. He can do anything he wants - he's got the practical skills, quality of the work, and he's very studious. The best of luck to him; I'm sure he'll be brilliant at whatever he turns his hands to."

Platinum sponsor, ADEY's Colin Yearp, who helped judge the competition, said:

"Well done to everyone involved. All three finalists have brought quality to the whole proceedings and it's great to see the next performing under pressure."

Tom represented the UK at WorldSkills Finals in Kazan, Russia in 2019, winning a Medal of Excellence. He came 4th in the world for plumbing skills!

Mae myfyriwr o adran Adeiladu Coleg Llandrillo a gynrychiolodd y DU mewn cystadleuaeth WorldSkills yn Rwsia llynedd, wedi cael ei enwi'n Brentis Plymio gorau'r DU!

Enillodd Tom Thomas, 21 oed o Borthmadog, myfyriwr Lefel 3 mewn Plymio a Gwresogi ar gampws y coleg yn Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, y gystadleuaeth 'HIP Prentis y Flwyddyn 2020'. Derbyniodd £1,000 ynghyd a gwerth miloedd o bunnoedd o offer safon diwydiant fel gwobrau. Derbyniodd Coleg Llandrillo fil o bunnoedd hefyd.

Mae Tom yn gweithio i AER Cymru ym Mhorthmadog ac yn dilyn cwrs yn y coleg un diwrnod yr wythnos. Daeth yn fuddugol yn y rownd derfynol a oedd wedi'i drefnu'n wahanol, yn dilyn cystadleuaeth frwd rhyngddo a dau fyfyriwr talentog arall ym maes plymio a gwresogi. Y ddau fyfyriwr arall yn y rownd derfynol eleni oedd Joseph Parkinson o University Academy Holbeach, Linconshire a Harry Pegler o South Gloucestershire and Stroud College, Bryste.

Cymerodd y dysgwyr ran mewn sail rownd ranbarthol rhwng mis Ionawr a mis Mawrth ym mhob cwr o'r wlad, cyn i'r cyfnod clo olygu bod rhaid gohirio'r gystadleuaeth. Cwblhaodd y saith enillydd rhanbarthol brawf byr ar-lein ac ychwanegwyd eu sgôr ar ganlyniadau'r prawf rhanbarthol. Cynhaliwyd y rownd derfynol diwrnod o hyd i'r tri uchaf ar yr un pryd ond yn eu colegau eu hunain.

Meddai Tom, a enillodd le yn y rownd derfynol ar ôl ennill rownd y Gogledd Orllewin yn Burnley College:

"Roedd y gystadleuaeth yn wych, a dw i wrth fy modd i gael fy enwi'n brentis plymio gorau'r DU. Roedd y rownd derfynol ar lefel tipyn uwch na'r rownd ranbarthol - roedd yn her i gwblhau'r gwaith ar amser. Mae'n rhywbeth arbennig i'w ychwanegu at fy CV - os bydda i'n chwilio am waith yn y dyfodol, gallaf gyfeirio at hyn, mi fydd o fantais i mi."

"Mae wedi gwella fy sgiliau technegol ac mae'n eich annog i ganolbwyntio ar wneud yn siŵr bod pob elfen o'r gwaith yn fanwl gywir. Rhaid bod yn hyderus wrth eich gwaith yn hytrach nag amau eich hun."

Dywedodd Chris Walling, tiwtor Tom, y byddai'n ddigon hapus i gael Tom i wneud gwaith yn ei gartref. Ychwanegodd:

"Mae Tom yn fyfyriwr ymarferol ardderchog, ac mae'n ymroi'n llawn i'w waith. Treuliodd oriau lawer yn ymarfer yn ystod ei amser ei hun cyn y gystadleuaeth, ac mi dalodd hynny ar ei ganfed."

"Mae o'n gweithio'n dda yn y coleg a pham fyddwn ni'n ymweld ag o ar y safle mae'n hyderus iawn. Gall gyflawni unrhyw beth - mae ganddo'r sgiliau ymarferol, mae ei waith o ansawdd da ac mae'n gweithio'n dda. Pob lwc iddi i'r dyfodol; Rwy'n siŵr y bydd yn llwyddo beth bynnag bydd o'n dewis ei wneud."

Dywedodd noddwr Platinwm Colin Yearp o ADEY, o oedd yn beirniadu'r gystadleuaeth:

"Da iawn wir i bawb a gymerodd ran. Roedd gwaith y tri myfyriwr yn y rownd derfynol yn safonol iawn, mae hi'n wych i weld y genhedlaeth nesaf yn cyflawni gwaith cystal o dan bwysau."

Cynrychiolodd Thomas y DU yn rownd derfynol cystadleuaeth WorldSkills yn Kazan, Rwsia ac enillodd Fedal Rhagoriaeth. Daeth yn bedwerydd yn y byd am ei sgiliau plymio!

Cylchgrawn HIP ydy'r unig gylchgrawn i fyfyrwyr a phrentisiaid plymio a gwresogi yn y DU.
