Ex-College Rugby Star Helps GB Rugby Sevens Shine on International Stage

An ex-Coleg Llandrillo rugby academy star has just returned from Canada after helping the Great Britain rugby sevens’ team claim second place in the 2021 World Rugby Sevens Series.

25-year-old Morgan Williams - who is originally from Felinheli and studied on the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport course at the college’s Rhos-on-Sea campus - was one of only two members of the squad from Wales.

Eventually, South Africa came away victorious, winning both tour events on their way to claiming their fourth World Series title. Due to impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, only two tournaments - in Vancouver and Edmonton - were played in the 2021 series instead of the usual ten. The number of teams participating was also reduced from sixteen to twelve at the tournaments.

Morgan was a key member of the men’s GB squad for the competition, which saw 12 teams divided into three pools of four using the same format as the Olympics. GB Sevens were drawn in Pool B with Ireland, Hong Kong and Jamaica.

After an excellent pool stage, GB had a thrilling win over USA (21-19), followed by a 22-12 victory over Canada to reach the final. Unfortunately for Morgan and the GB team, South Africa ran out 24-12 winners in the final.
