Morgandie Shares Sunsail Experience After Successful Dubrovnik Placement
Morgandie Harrold recently returned to Coleg Meirion Dwyfor's Hafan campus in Pwllheli to share her experiences with current Marine Engineering students, following a successful six-month secondment with Sunsail in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Morgandie, who completed her Marine Engineering Level 3 qualification at the campus, spent June to December 2025 working at Sunsail's Dubrovnik base, managing a flotilla of 47 vessels.
In a presentation to learners at the college, Morgandie highlighted the importance of hands-on learning, especially her experience with outboard engines, which proved invaluable in her role. "Take in everything your tutors teach you, especially about engines," she advised. "It'll make a huge difference when you’re on the job."
Morgandie’s journey began after attending a similar presentation by a past student, Lois from Blaenau Ffestiniog, who also studied Marine Engineering at Hafan and later worked for three seasons at Sunsail. Inspired, Morgandie applied for the seasonal role after completing her Level 3 qualification in June 2025.
As part of her duties in Dubrovnik, Morgandie was responsible for maintaining 5-6 vessels, ensuring they were ready for guests. “We checked everything, from doors and hinges to engines and auxiliary parts, to make sure everything was in top condition,” she explained. “The handover days were long, but it was worth it to ensure guests had a seamless experience."
Morgandie also shared highlights of her personal experience, such as her family visiting and enjoying a week aboard one of the boats she maintained. Despite the occasional challenging task, like responding to a "Chase call" to repair a boat's toilet on a remote island, she found the work deeply rewarding. “It’s not always glamorous, but it’s part of the job. And the skills I learned at college were crucial in those moments,” she said.
Looking ahead, Morgandie is already considering returning for the next season, with Sunsail offering opportunities for roles at bases around the world. “This experience has been unforgettable. I highly recommend it to any Marine Engineering student,” she said. “You get to apply what you’ve learned while enjoying amazing weather and a beautiful location.”
Elis Morey, Marine Engineering Programme Lead, praised Morgandie’s success,
"Morgandie and Lois are shining examples of what our students can achieve with dedication. Our courses prepare students for global opportunities in marine engineering, with hands-on experience that sets them up for success."
