Green Digital Academy drives decarbonisation for north Wales SMEs

SMEs across North Wales are making significant strides towards a net zero future, supported by the Green Digital Academy – an initiative funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF).

Nearly 100 businesses have accessed a total of £377,000 in grant funding, helping them to reduce carbon emissions and adopt green technologies. The project has also empowered around 500 individuals with expert training, and delivered 179 customised decarbonisation plans, putting businesses in control of their sustainability journey.

Operating across five North Wales counties, the Green Digital Academy has furthered innovation, sustainability, and digital development.

Donna Hodgson, Regional Project Manager at Busnes@LlandrilloMenai said: “The Green Digital Academy has supported and continues to support businesses to take real, measurable steps towards sustainability.

“It highlights the vital role of targeted investment and strategic support in helping businesses adapt to a greener future and use the power of new technology. For those who have taken part it’s not about planning for net zero it’s about making it happen.”

One business that benefited from the programme is Outdoor Alternative, based in Anglesey. Owner Chris Wright shared how the support transformed their operations:

“The Green Digital Academy gave us a clear plan for decarbonisation. As a result, we’ve invested in renewable energy-powered heating. It’s great to know that when our customers shower at the end of the day, that the hot water comes from Rhoscolyn sunshine and not LPG.”

Busnes@LlandrilloMenai is expanding its training offer, thanks to secured funding from Ynys Môn County Council and Denbighshire County Council via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Green Digital Academy.

The aim is to create a lasting legacy that supports regional economic growth by helping businesses adopt more sustainable practices - such as renewable energy, retrofitting, energy efficiency, decarbonisation and digital innovation. Training will be delivered from the CIST Centre in Llangefni and Busnes@LlandrilloMenai's new training at St Asaph Business Park in April.

Donna Hodgson added: “These developments will provide ongoing expert support for businesses across North Wales as they work towards net zero ambitions. With a strong focus on renewable energy, retrofitting, energy efficiency, decarbonisation, and digital innovation, the Green Digital Academy is helping to lay the foundations for a greener, more resilient regional economy.”
