Course Description

This is an industry-recognised qualification designed to cover the fundamental skills and knowledge common to all engineering practices. If you are keen to become an Engineer and have the relevant entry requirements then the Enhanced Engineering Level 3 course is for you.

Entry Criteria

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths or Numeracy
  • A relevant Level 2 Diploma qualification at Pass grade

As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview where you will have the opportunity to discuss the content of the course and ask questions.


The 1 year programme consists of a Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering (1.5 ‘A’ Level equivalent) and a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations. The second year consists of a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering (top up to 3 ‘A’ Level equivalent).

In addition, you will follow an individual programme of essential skills development (campus and grade profile dependant) potentially including: Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate, literacy, numeracy, tutorial and employability.

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • classroom sessions
  • presentations and demonstrations
  • student centred work
  • discussions
  • practical workshop sessions
  • virtual learning environment (Moodle or Google Classrooms)
  • ILT and remote learning
  • Industry visits
  • 150 hours work experience


The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:

  • written assessments
  • portfolio work
  • written tests
  • practical performance and observation
  • online tests
  • external exams (Year 1 - 2 exams, Year 2 - 1 exam)


Completion of this course gives a number of options for progression, including:

  • the workplace

  • degree apprenticeships
  • university
