A-level Student Chosen Out of 1000s to Attend Cambridge University Residential Course

A Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor A-level student spent part of her summer holidays attending a residential course at Cambridge University after being selected out of thousands of applicants.

17-year-old Shauna Lloyd from Llwyngwril near Dolgellau - who is studying for her A-levels at the college’s Dolgellau campus - was chosen as one of only 40 students out of thousands who applied to attend Cambridge University's Downing College for a two-day, enhanced residential course in person, due to a relaxing in restrictions.

Earlier in the summer Shauna also took part in several of the UK’s best university summer school programmes on a virtual basis due to more severe Covid restrictions. Shauna originally ‘attended’ Lancaster University’s Psychology summer school, followed by an online summer school organised by the Biological Science department at Magdalene College, Cambridge University.

Shauna said: “I was really happy to be chosen out of thousands of applicants to take part in Downing College’s summer school. I especially enjoyed the Critical Thinking workshops and the workshops to help you make a successful application to study at Cambridge University.

“Not all of the time was given to academic endeavours: the BBQ on Downing College’s lawn after a four-mile walking tour of Cambridge was one of the highlights, and I will always remember the guided punt tour around the famous architecture and colleges of Cambridge.”

If not all of this was enough for Shauna, she also given the opportunity to travel to Surrey to take part in the University of Surrey’s Psychology summer school a few days after returning from Cambridge.

Shauna concluded: “I’ve had an amazing time this summer. All of the summer schools that I attended were free of charge and I would recommend all my fellow students to apply for next year. Applications are normally open from March - May so keep an eye out; it truly is a fantastic opportunity.”
