STEM Racing teams seek sponsors to turbocharge 2026 campaign

Teams from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor have reached the UK final for the past two years, and local companies are urged to take advantage of the opportunity to get involved

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor’s STEM Racing teams are looking for sponsors to help put them in pole position.

STEM Racing is the new name for F1 in Schools, an educational project in which teams of students design, manufacture and race a miniature Formula 1 car.

Teams from the college have reached the UK national finals for the past two years running. Now local companies are being urged to back this year’s cohort as they bid to follow in the slipstream of success.

Engineering lecturer and STEM Racing lead Emlyn Evans said: “We would like to offer local companies the chance to support our young engineers in this venture. All companies are welcome to approach us with sponsorship offers for the teams we will be entering this year.

“The level of sponsorships range from full team sponsorship with full branding on the car, team clothing and publicity on social media and college articles, to branding shared with other companies on multiple parts of the car, such as the wheels, front wing or rear wings.

“Past sponsors have also gained from project collaboration with the college, for example with provision of work experience and support with 3D printing and lean manufacturing training for their employees.”

Last year, CK Tools were one of the sponsors of Team Loop Racing, who reached the UK final after finishing as overall professional class winners in the North Wales competition.

Their successful partnership resulted in another collaboration, with the college purchasing toolkits from the Pwllheli-based supplier following a proposal from Team Loop Racing.

BTEC Level 3 Enhanced General Engineering students were presented with the toolkits earlier this term as reward for completing the first year of their studies, which included 150 hours of work experience.

Assistant principal Fflur Rees Jones said: “It was a great pleasure for me to present each learner with a starter toolbox set containing a 39-piece ratchet set, adjustable spanner, hammer, hacksaw, level and a vernier calliper from the renowned quality of the CK range of tools.

“We have a great team working together to provide our learners with the best opportunities and experiences whilst they study on the BTEC Enhanced Engineering course. The involvement and support of local employers does not go unnoticed - we could not provide this essential service without them all.”

Noah Hutchings, programme lead for Level 3 Engineering at the Dolgellau campus, said: “We are proud of the commitment our students make to go out into local industry during half terms and Easter holidays to gain this valuable work experience as part of the qualification. We are very grateful to all the companies who have provided this support as part of the work placement scheme and continue to do so every year.”
