Rondo Media and Coleg Menai partner to foster the next generation of creative talent in North Wales

RONDO Media has launched an exclusive scholarship programme for creative arts learners at Coleg Menai.

Launching this academic year, the ‘Huw Geth Scholarship’ has been established in tribute to the late Huw Gethin Jones, by his wife, Teleri, and Rondo Media. Huw worked as an editor for the tv production company, before sadly passing away due to Covid complications in 2021.

Learners at Coleg Menai studying TV and Film, Media, Music, and Performing Arts have the opportunity to apply for the £1,000 scholarship. Designed to support their career aspirations, the scholarship will also involve bespoke mentoring, tailored to the winner’s individual career goals, from a seasoned professional at Rondo Media.

The scholarship, which will run for 10 years, comes as part of a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations. The MoU sets out arrangements to provide invaluable support and experiences for Coleg Menai's creative arts and media learners.

Creative Arts courses, offered at the recently opened state-of-the-art Bangor campus on Parc Menai, provide students with access to industry-standard facilities, including professional video cameras, a green screen studio and control room, a fully equipped music studio, a theatre, and multiple dance studios.

The collaboration with Rondo Media will provide students with invaluable opportunities, including hands-on work experience on the set of the popular S4C TV series Rownd a Rownd. Students will gain practical insights both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

Rondo Media staff will deliver guest lectures, masterclasses and workshops to the Coleg Menai cohort through the academic year.

The MoU will also see Grŵp Llandrillo Menai provide bespoke training and professional development courses for Rondo Media staff.

Siôn Peters-Flynn, Principal of Coleg Menai, said:

“We’re thrilled to partner with Rondo Media for this scholarship. Together with the broader collaborative work outlined within the memorandum of understanding, it will give our students exceptional opportunities to develop the skills and industry experience needed to stand out in the competitive TV and film sectors.”

“Our creative arts learners already benefit from state-of-the-art facilities at our new Bangor campus; this exciting collaboration with Rondo Media will elevate their career prospects to new heights by linking them directly with established professionals, and giving them invaluable real industry experience.”

Bedwyr Rees, Director of Rondo Media and Senior Producer, said,

“This partnership with Grŵp Llandrillo Menai shows our real commitment to growing a sustainable and flourishing creative industry in Wales. The film and television industry is built on creativity, vision and drive.

“This memorandum of understanding gives us a basis upon which to identify and nurture talented and motivated young people to help them towards a prosperous future.

“Huw Gethin Jones was a multi-talented and much cherished member of staff here at Rondo. As a loving family man, it’s entirely apt that the Huw Geth Scholarship will go towards providing a helping hand to young people, allowing them to build the foundations of their career and life within the creative arts”.

Llion Iwan, Chief Content Officer for S4C, said,

“I lectured Huw Gethin at Bangor University and he was an enthusiastic and dedicated student who had set his sights on working in the media. He arranged a number of work experience opportunities for himself, mastered the art of editing and secured a job.

“He spent his career editing programmes for S4C and a talented and likeable man was lost far too early. It's great that the Rondo wants to support future learners with their studies in memory of Huw - I can't think of anyone better to inspire them.”
