Former Coleg Menai Student’s Media Company Producing Documentaries for ITV

To celebrate the 40 year anniversary of Coleg Menai’s Art Foundation Programme, we take a look at Stephen Edwards’ life after his time on the course.

Coleg Menai is currently exhibiting at Storiel and Galeri in Bangor, celebrating 40 years since the introduction of the Art Foundation course. The galleries are currently showcasing past students who have continued with their artistic endeavours across a wide range of industries, and they are also showcasing the wide variety of courses and opportunities available at the college.

After studying Art/Design and Technology at Ysgol Brynrefail’s sixth form, Stephen Edwards, who is originally from Llanberis, was on course to go to London. However, feeling he wasn’t quite ready for city life, he decided to stay local and studied the Art Foundation course at the college’s Parc Menai site from 1993-1994.

Stephen said: “I would encourage anybody to study through Coleg Menai. It was hard work but totally worth it. The course made me the person I am today.”

The Art Foundation course eventually opened a lot of doors for Stephen. After Coleg Menai, and three more years of study, he was awarded a BA Honours in Graphic Design from the University of Swansea.

Following his time in Swansea, Stephen returned home, gaining a position as a Graphic Designer with Anglesey Council, juggling this new role with his decade-long position as a radio presenter with Radio Cymru. If that wasn’t enough, Stephen also established his company ‘Cread Cyf’ in 2005. Since 2015, ‘Cread Cyf’ has been Stephen’s full-time concern, and has an office based in MSparc in Gaerwen.

The company offers a range of graphics, design and media services, including broadcasting. One of its most recent shows was the ITV documentary ‘Beyond the Line’ which followed the lives of North Wales’ road police officers. Stephen also worked on the S4C’s ‘Llinell Las’ series with the second series coming out soon and numerous other shows for ITV and ITV Network.

Stephen is an active member of the North Wales community: he is one of the organisers of the iconic Wales International Mountain Race - Ras yr Wyddfa and is also the chairman of the Llanfairpwll Community Council and the Llanfairpwll Juniors Football Club.

Stephen is also an ambassador for Big Ideas Wales, which encourages young Welsh people to increase their entrepreneurial skills.

Stephen hasn’t forgotten about his time here at Coleg Menai, as he’s one of the sponsors for the Sports Academy at Coleg Menai.

Stephen is looking forward to working closely with Coleg Menai in the future, hopefully give students the opportunity they need to stay in employment in North Wales.
