Cadi’s Ynys Môn zine showcased in prestigious London exhibition
Cadi Richardson created the work while studying the Art Foundation course at Coleg Menai earlier this year
Artwork by recent Coleg Menai student Cadi Richardson will be shown at an exhibition in London for the next 12 months.
Her zine, ‘Ynys Môn Camping Trip Guide’, was selected for the year-long ‘Future Observatory’ exhibition at The Design Museum in Kensington.
Cadi, from Conwy, created the work earlier this year as part of her Art Foundation course at the Parc Menai campus.
She has since successfully completed the course, and is off to London herself as she prepares to study Textile Design at the world-renowned Central Saint Martins.
Cadi was surprised to be chosen for the exhibition, after her zine (a homemade magazine) started as a fun exercise during a two-day mapping workshop.
She said: “I just thought about childhood summers spent in Anglesey camping with my family. In all honesty I started off just messing around making lists with my friends about obscure and weird things to take or do on a camping trip. It was a lot of fun and I didn't take it too seriously.
“I was so surprised to hear my work had been chosen. Maybe the fact that I wasn't thinking too hard about the final result or it being the best work I’d ever done was a reason. The workshop came up in the middle of me preparing my portfolio for uni and I was so stressed I almost asked to sit it out. I’m glad I didn’t.”
Cadi says the year-long Art Foundation course has prepared her well for university as she looks forward to a creative career working with traditional textiles.
“I have gained so much from the Art Foundation course,” she said. “I’ve gained confidence and more passion in what I was doing, and made lifelong friends. This zine workshop was definitely a highlight for me because of all the fun we had those two days.
“I’m looking forward to moving to London in September to study Textile Design at Central Saint Martins. I wish to keep making art through textiles and combining traditional textile techniques into the work I do now: For example I recently repaired an old spinning wheel and have been spinning my own yarn out of sheepswool to work with. I hope I can continue to do that as a career.”
The Future Observatory: Tools for Transition exhibition, which champions new design thinking on environmental issues, opens at The Design Museum on September 12. The museum recently hosted an exhibition featuring artworks from the career of legendary film-maker Tim Burton, while upcoming shows range from an exhibition on London’s iconic Blitz night club to a retrospective on the career of film director Wes Anderson.
The Art Foundation course is specifically designed to prepare students for Higher Education and future employment within the art and design sector. Learn more here, or go to gllm.ac.uk/courses/art-and-design-and-photography to see the range of courses offered by Grŵp Llandrillo Menai.
