Apprentice Spotlight: McKenzie

McKenzie is an apprentice with RWE, studying at our Wind Turbine Workshop in the Engineering Centre on our Rhyl campus. Through his apprenticeship, McKenzie combines hands-on training in renewable energy with real-world industry experience, developing the technical skills and knowledge needed for a career in the mechanical and electrical engineering sector.

What made you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to go straight into work rather than stay in full-time education. I learn much better in a hands-on environment and prefer learning by doing. I chose the mechanical and electrical industry because I enjoy working with my hands and understanding how things work. An apprenticeship allows me to gain practical experience while also building my knowledge and qualifications, which I see as the best path for my future career.

What were you doing before starting your apprenticeship?

Before starting my apprenticeship, I was studying my GCSEs at Sir Robert Pattinson Academy, taking subjects including geography, business, hospitality and catering, and physical education. Outside of school, I was an air cadet with 1237 North Hykeham Squadron and played rugby for Lincoln Football Rugby Club.

What new skills have you developed since starting?

Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve developed a wide range of new skills, particularly in mechanical and electrical work. I’ve learned how to use tools safely and correctly, gained an understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, and improved my problem-solving by learning how to identify and fix faults. My confidence has also grown, and I’m now more comfortable asking questions and getting involved in tasks.

What opportunities has the apprenticeship opened up for you?

The biggest opportunity has been competing in WorldSkills UK. I took part in the national Renewable Energy competition from 25–29 November, completing eight challenging tasks over two intense days. Competing at a national level was a great experience, and I’m proud to have finished third. I’m excited to see what opportunities this opens up next.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship?

If you want to learn on the job, I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship. You gain real experience while working towards a qualification. Even if you don’t have much experience to begin with, take the opportunity if it’s there. If you’re willing to listen, ask questions and work hard, I’d say go for it.
