Amy called up for North West Fury in National Netball League

The Coleg Llandrillo sport and public services manager is making her return to the regional game for the first time since becoming a mum

Coleg Llandrillo’s Amy Thomson has been selected to represent North West Wales in Wales Netball’s National League.

Amy, the college’s sport and public services manager, plays goal attack for Colwyn Bay, and also coaches the club.

She has been called up to the matchday 12 for North West Fury - marking her return to the regional game for the first time since becoming a mum.

The National League comprises eight regional teams from around Wales, who play each other across three match days in Bangor (May 31), Swansea (June 29) and Cardiff (August 2).

The competition was previously a one-day tournament, but has been expanded in recent years to a ‘mini-season’ format - offering players a chance to compete at the regional level on a more regular basis.

Amy played regularly in the previous format, but stepped back from regional netball after having children.

She entered trials for the new format for the first time last year, making the Fury squad as a training associate - so her call-up for this year’s competition means she will get to play in the revamped format for the first time.

Amy said: “I’m looking forward to it. I used to play in the previous format, but that was before I had my children, so I didn’t do it for a few years because the training is every other weekend and I couldn’t commit to that at the time.

“But now the children are a bit older, I’ve got more time to train, so I put myself forward for trials for the first time last year.

“Having made the matchday 12 this time, it’s gratifying to know that I can combine a rewarding career at Coleg Llandrillo with being a mum, and still compete at the same level that I did previously.”

Amy started at Coleg Llandrillo as a part-time sports lecturer in 2012, before progressing to teach full-time. She became sports curriculum coordinator in 2016 and then programme area manager for Sport and Public Services in October 2022.

North West Fury are hosting a fund-raiser for their National League campaign this Sunday, May 11, at the Canolfan Brailsford in Bangor.

The day will feature two netball matches, Llandudno Thunder vs Walis Caernarfon U16s (11am-12), and North West Fury vs West Cheshire Warriors (12-2pm). There will also be a tombola and cake sale. £2 entry (cash only).
