Apprentice - Simulator Engineer

Simulator Engineer Apprentice - required to assist in all aspects of Simulator Engineering Maintenance work on site at RAF Valley.

We operate two sites at Valley, on the Basic Flying Training site (BFT) we support the RAF training pilots on the T1 Texan aircraft. We have a full dome simulator and two smaller cockpit simulators.

On the Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) we maintain two full mission simulators (domes) and six cockpit simulators in addition to a virtual reality simulator suite.

The Role:

As a flight simulator engineering apprentice you will work alongside our team of experienced simulator engineers carrying out a wide range of tasks. These tasks can involve mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer and networking engineering and aircraft systems knowledge.

Day to day tasks include:

  • projector replacement
  • visual system setups
  • fault diagnosis of simulator systems
  • component replacement
  • motion control loading system setup
  • readying the simulators for use by the RAF
  • Configuration updates
  • Network fault finding and rectification
  • Some design and implementation of improvements to the simulator
  • 3D printing and bench fitting/fabrication


We operate under a two shift system working a 9 day fortnight. The early shift runs from 0630 until 1400hrs and the late shift runs from 1400hrs to 2230.

You will attend college one day per week and we will also arrange for you to attend additional courses during your time with us (working at height, IPAF, First Aid etc).
There may be opportunities for apprentices to travel both in the UK and overseas.

  • Support - You will receive support throughout your Apprenticeship from your Manager, Teams, fellow apprentices, and cross business areas.
  • Training on the Job - We will offer you the opportunity to train on the job. You will be given a job with real responsibilities and the experience and skills you take away from your apprenticeship will directly help you with your future careers.
  • Training Providers - You will receive external Training from a provider that has been carefully selected. From this you will also end up with an external professional qualification.
  • Cross Line of Business - This is where we give you the opportunity to get a flavour of our Lockheed Martin sites and learn about the ins and outs of each Business Area. It is also a chance for you to continue to grow your connections you made at the Welcome Event. Cross Line of Business events are also available to all areas of Early Careers so this gives you the chance to interact with Placement Students and Graduates.

Required skills, qualifications and experience

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths
  • A relevant Level 2 qualification at Merit
  • Relevant industry experience
  • Driving licence would be an advantage
