Course Description

Would you like a career in hospitality and catering?

Could you benefit from an introductory course, with plenty of hands-on learning?

This course allows you to develop essential hospitality and food preparation skills, as well as learning about food safety. This will ensure that you have the knowledge and skills required to progress onto the next programme of study or to enter employment.

You will be expected to purchase kit, uniform and books, costing approximately £280 (subject to change). Help towards this cost may be available through grants

Entry Criteria

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • You will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to study by achieving your GCSE target grades and completing year 11 with good attendance.
  • Successful completion of a Traineeship, Pre-vocational, Pathways or School Link Programme
  • Relevant industry experience

Applicants already studying at the college will need an attendance of 86% on their current course.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Theory sessions
  • Virtual learning environment
  • Practical sessions in a realistic working environment

Your programme will include a combination of:

  • Essential Skills qualifications and/or
  • GCSE resits

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

GCSE resits

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.

Maths & Welsh/English

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.

Assessment

The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:

  • A series of practical tasks
  • Practical checklists to explain your work
  • Knowledge and research tasks
  • Observation

Progression

Completion of this course can lead to a number of options in education and employment. You could move directly into employment and apply your knowledge and skills in the workplace. You are encouraged to gain work experience during this course, and may be able to secure a full-time position when you finish.

Alternatively, you may choose to progress onto a Level 2 course, where you can further develop your skills and knowledge in this field. You could proceed onto a number of programmes at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, including:

  • Hospitality and Catering Level 2
  • Foundation Apprenticeship Level 2 in Food Production and Cooking
  • Foundation Apprenticeship Level 2 in Professional Cookery
