Course Description

Are you looking to gain practical experience of fabrication and welding work?

This course introduces you to the fundamental techniques of fabrication and welding. It allows you to gain multiple qualifications, and is suitable for anyone with a genuine interest in welding and fabrication.

The course covers a range of basic welding tasks such as creating welded and brazed joints. The practical knowledge you gain will be relevant to steel work, shipbuilding, car maintenance, plumbing, sculpting, general maintenance and many other areas.

Enhanced Engineering (with Industry Placement) (Llangefni only):
In addition to attending the course, it is a requirement that you gain work experience of at least 150 hours during the year which is usually as a day release. Work experience is essential if you are to achieve the required knowledge and vocational skills and progress to Level 3 Welding and Fabrication or Apprenticeship.

Entry Criteria

In order to qualify for this course you will need the following:

  • Successfully completed Engineering Craft Level 1 OR
  • Gained relevant industry experience with good academic background OR
  • Enhanced Engineering Level 2 (with industry placement)
  • Gained 4 GCSE A*- C, including Maths/Numeracy & 1st language Welsh/English - with a strong interest, knowledge and desire to work in the industry. (Assessed in interview)

As part of the application process you must attend an interview to discuss the course, your previous experience and any training or qualifications you may already have achieved.

Delivery

The programme will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Practical demonstrations
  • Realistic working tasks
  • Lectures to develop underpinning knowledge
  • Assignment work

Your programme will include a combination of:

  • Essential Skills qualifications and/or
  • GCSE resits
Essential Skills

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

GCSE resits

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.

Maths & Welsh/English

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.

Assessment

The programme will be assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Internal practical assessment
  • Online assessment
  • Oral questioning
  • Written questions
  • Short learner task sheets for you to complete independently

Progression

Completion of this course will give you the fundamental skills and knowledge to complete fabrication/welding work.

You could proceed onto:

  • Fabrication and Welding Level 3
  • Apprenticeship in Welding Level 3
