Course Description

This framework provides a nationally agreed apprenticeship framework for a work-based learning route into employment for the beauty industry, using qualifications that combine both skills and knowledge.

Depending on the pathway followed and level achieved, learners completing an apprenticeship will undertake roles such as: Junior beauty therapist, manicurist or skin care and make-up consultant (Foundation Apprenticeship)

Careers may take place in a variety of locations including beauty salons, hospitals, care homes, cruise ships, spas and health clubs or working freelance.

Entry Criteria

  • No formal qualifications are required, but experience in Beauty is desirable.
  • Apprentices must have an employer who can cover the NVQ criteria or we can support you in finding an employer
  • You must be enthusiastic, committed and willing to learn
  • You must have a calm and caring personality
  • You will be required to attend an interview

All places are subject to satisfactory interviews.

Delivery

The majority of the course is delivered in the workplace. However, Work-Based Learners will benefit from a blend of the following:

  • Theory classes
  • Practical workshops
  • Commercial sessions
  • Demonstrations

The beauty therapy courses do not attend college for practical and theory workshops. All technical training will need to be provided by the salon. There will be opportunities to undertake training in the college salon as well as bring in clients when needed. An Assessor will complete all assessments and theory within the workplace.

You will have to attend Essential Skills Qualifications sessions at a convenient college site, if required.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Completion of Electronic Portfolio of practical assessments for each unit Assignments and tasks
  • Multiple-choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge (Online Exams) Theory based tasks and tests
  • Work-Based Observations and Assessments
  • Your behavior will also count towards your assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication

Progression

  • To the Level 3 Beauty Therapy apprenticeship program.
  • Into employment as a junior beauty therapist, junior nail technician or other job roles in the beauty related industries such as a junior make-up artist or beauty consultant.
  • Progression will be based on meeting clientele requirements for the higher level.
  • Progression may also be available to other related routes such as Nail Services or Hairdressing.

Campus Information Work-Based Learning

A practical course aimed at those who would like to pursue a career in Beauty Therapy, this pathway develops skills to foundation level and employment as a Junior Beauty Therapist.

Unit Information

Pathway 1 - Beauty Therapy (General Route)

A Junior Beauty Therapist would be trained to carry out treatments including waxing, manicure, pedicure, facials and make-up activities as well as assisting with spa operations.

To achieve this qualification candidates must complete 8 mandatory units totaling 45 credits and optional units to a minimum of 9 optional credits to give an overall total of 54 credits.

MANDATORY UNITS

  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce the risk to health and safety - 4 credits (1 Competence 3 Knowledge)
  • Promote additional services or products to clients - 6 credits (2 Competence 4 Knowledge)
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work - 3 credits (2 Competence 1 Knowledge)
  • Provide facial skin care treatment - 8 credits (4 Competence 4 Knowledge)
  • Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and lashes - 5 credits (3 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Carry out waxing services - 7 credits (4 Competence 3 Knowledge)
  • Provide manicure services - 6 credits (3 Competence 3 Knowledge)
  • Provide pedicure services - 6 credits (3 Competence 3 Knowledge)

OPTIONAL UNITS

  • Fulfill salon reception duties - 3 credits (2 Competence 1 Knowledge)
  • Carry out ear piercing - 2 credits (1 Competence 1 Knowledge)
  • Provide make-up services - 6 credits (4 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Enhance appearance using skin camouflage - 6 credits (4 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Assist with spa operations - 4 credits (3 Competence 1 Knowledge)
  • Provide Threading Services - 4 credits (2 Competence 2 Knowledge)

Pathway 2 - Beauty Therapy (Make-Up Route)

A Junior beauty consultant would be trained to carry out treatments including skin care and make up application. Usually working for a product manufacturer supplying consultation services, promoting and selling products. A Junior Make-up Artist would be trained to carry out treatments including facials, make-up and make-up instruction, skin camouflage and enhancement of eyebrows and lashes.

To achieve this qualification candidates must complete 7 mandatory units totaling 39 credits and optional units to a minimum of 5 credits to give an overall total of44 credits.

  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety - 4 credits (1 Competence 3 Knowledge)
  • Promote additional services or products to clients - 6 credits (2 Competence 4 Knowledge)
  • Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work - 3 credits (2 Competence 1 Knowledge)
  • Provide facial skin care treatment - 8 credits (4 Competence 4 Knowledge)
  • Enhance the appearance of eyebrows and lashes - 5 credits (3 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Provide make-up services - 6 credits (4 Competence 2 Knowledge)
  • Instruct clients in the use and application of skin care products and make-up -7 credits (5 Competence 2 Knowledge)

OPTIONAL UNITS
