Course Description
This framework provides a nationally agreed apprenticeship framework for a work-based learning route into employment for the barbering industry, using qualifications that combine both skills and knowledge.
The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Barbering will allow the junior barber to advance their creative skills.
Entry Criteria
- You must have an NVQ Level 2 equivalent in Barbering or Hairdressing or relevant industrial experience
- You must have an employer that can cover the NVQ criteria or we can support you in finding an employer
- You must be enthusiastic, committed and willing to learn
- You must have a calm and caring personality
- You will be required to attend an interview
All places are subject to satisfactory interview and meeting clientele requirements
Delivery
The course is delivered in the workplace. However, Work-Based Learners will have opportunities to attend college for:
- Upskilling classes for practical and theory
- Commercial sessions
- Demonstrations
You will have to attend Essential Skills Qualifications sessions at a convenient college site, if required.
Assessment
The course is assessed through a blend of the following:
- Electronic Portfolio of practical assessments for each unit Assignments and tasks
- Multiple-choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge (Online Exams) Theory based tasks and tests
- Work-Based Observations and Assessments
- Your behaviour will also count towards your assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication
Progression
The Level 3 NVQ gives you a valuable qualification and will help you progress in the right direction towards a challenging career. You will be able to seek additional responsibilities in your workplace, and may be able to work in a supervisory or managerial role.
You will also be prepared for further study at a more advanced level. You could continue to study and progress into higher education salon management.
Progression may also be available to other Hairdressing Pathways.
Campus Information Work-Based Learning
Candidates must complete all 4 mandatory units totaling 40 credits and optional units toa minimum of 26 credits to give an overall total of 66 credits to achieve the full qualification.
MANDATORY UNITS
- Provide client consultation services - 8 credits (3 Competence 5 Knowledge)
- Provide shaving services - 11 credits (5 Competence 6 Knowledge)
- Design and create a range of facial hair shapes - 7 credits (3 Competence 4 Knowledge)
- Creatively cut hair using a combination of barbering techniques - 14 credits (8 Competence 6 Knowledge)
OPTIONAL UNITS
- Provide a variety of relaxing services - 9 credits (5 Competence 4 Knowledge)
- Design and create patterns in hair - 12 credits (6 Competence 6 Knowledge)
- Hair colour correction services 15 credits (7 Competence 8 Knowledge)
- Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills - 9 credits (4 Competence 5 Knowledge)
- Provide specialist hair and scalp treatments - 12 credits (4 Competence 8 Knowledge)
- Perm and neutralise hair - 10 credits (5 Competence 5 Knowledge)
- Colour and lighten men's hair - 14 credits (6 Competence 8 Knowledge)
- Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities - 10 credits (3 Competence 7 Knowledge)
- Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business - 7 credits (4 Competence 3 Knowledge)
- Fulfill salon reception duties - 6 credits (4 Competence 2 Knowledge)
