Course Description

Would you like to develop a career in uniformed public services?

This programme is suitable for students wishing to follow a career in uniformed services e.g. fire service, police, army, navy etc.

The programme is appropriate for learners who are active in their fitness and learning. It has been designed to equip you with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for success in current and future employment, or progression to Level 3 courses.

The course involves outdoor activities within which you will be challenged both physically and mentally. This will require the correct clothing and a positive attitude towards developing yourself.

It is delivered using a mixture of practical, work-related and theoretical tasks and activities

Entry Criteria

In order to qualify for this course, you will need at least one of the following:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade D or above. Preferably these would be in English or Welsh 1st Language and Maths / Numeracy

OR

  • If you are progressing from Level 1 you should have a relevant level 1 qualification (ideally the Sport and Public Services Level 1) plus at least Entry 3 Essential Skills Number and Level 1 Communications (or equivalent GCSEs)

If you are not sure if you have the entry requirements profile, or have alternative qualifications that you think are equivalent, please contact learner services via the chat function or directly. Learner services will be able to discuss your profile and advise you of course options.

This course will form the main part of your programme of study. In addition an essential part of your studies will be to improve your numeracy

and literacy, You will be given tuition at a level that is appropriate to your current stage of development to help you improve and develop these vital skills

As part of the application process, you may be asked to attend an interview to give you the opportunity to discuss the course.

  • Classroom discussion

  • Formal lectures

  • Guest speakers

  • Individual research

  • Group work

  • Projects

  • Online support and resources

Your programme will include a combination of:

  • Essential Skills qualifications and/or
  • GCSE resits
Essential Skills

This may include a combination of Application of Number, Communication, Digital Literacy and Essential Employability Skills

GCSE resits

This may include GCSE Numeracy/Maths and/or Welsh/English Language.

Maths & Welsh/English

If you don't achieve a C or above in Maths and/ or English/Welsh, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme.

  • Performance and observation

Progression

Completion of this course will provide you with various options in employment and education.

You will have gained a valuable insight into the uniformed public services, along with the training and qualification to help you succeed. As well as progressing into the public service of your choice, you will also have the option of going into other professions such as local authority employment or security work.

If you wish to proceed onto advanced studies, you will be able to choose from a number of Level 3 courses, particularly if you achieve a Distinction at Level 2.

  • Sport and Outdoor Activities Level 3

  • Sport (Performance and Excellence) Level 3
