Course Description
This welding qualification at Level 1 is designed for those wishing to enter the industry and for those wanting to gain a welding qualification for their own personal skills development.
What do the Level 1 Welding qualifications cover?
They allow candidates to learn, develop and practise the basic skills required for safe welding of simple tasks for employment, hobby and/or career progression in the engineering sector.
Candidates need to apply for one of the welding disciplines per 10 week course. (Tig/Mig/MMA). Please enquire with the department directly by emailing edward5l@gllm.ac.uk should you want any further information regarding the qualification pathway content, suitability and its requirements.
Entry Criteria
No formal qualifications are required, but candidates should have good health and be capable of working in a practical workshop setting with some metalworking machinery and associated hazards. Candidates should also be able to follow instructions and be able to work independently at times when undertaking Welding tasks.
PPE - Safety boots, overalls and safety glasses (welding PPE will be supplied if required).
Delivery
Mostly hands on practical skills training with classroom introduction to Mig welding process, equipment, Health and Safety.
Assessment
- 5 practical test pieces - witnessed and signed off by the assessor.
- Oral test - expected to undertake a knowledge assessment, which is done via oral questioning by the assessor.
All assessment records are recorded in a course workbook that you will be provided with at the start of the course, and will be submitted for internal quality assurance upon completion of the 10 weeks.
Progression
The Level 1 qualifications provide knowledge and practical skills that enable candidates to progress into employment or to the following qualifications:
- Level 2 Award in Welding Skills (Tig/Mig/MMA) - 3268-02)
- Level 2 Diploma in Engineering - Welding & Fabrication (2850)
- Level 2 Diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (7682-20)
