Course Description

This half-day introductory course provides a practical overview of Air Source Heat Pumps and Ground Source Heat Pumps, focusing on their principles, installation considerations, and performance in domestic properties. Learners will explore the differences between air source and ground source systems, key design elements, and how to address common installation challenges. The course also covers MCS certification requirements and what customers can expect regarding running costs and maintenance. It is ideal for those new to low-carbon heating technologies and seeking foundational understanding for further technical training

Topic

Key Learning Outcomes

Welcome & Context

Understand why the UK is switching to low-carbon heat, government targets and support (e.g., Boiler Upgrade Scheme), and an overview of heat pumps vs. traditional heating.

How Heat Pumps Work

Understand the principles of heat transfer and the refrigeration cycle, differences between air source and ground source systems, system components, and typical system layouts.

Installation Considerations

Recognise property suitability (insulation, radiator sizing), sizing and heat loss calculations, noise, planning permission, siting requirements, and common installation challenges.

Certification, Performance and Customer Expectations

Understand MCS certification requirements (e.g., MIS 3005), Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) and efficiency, system handover, user guidance, maintenance, and common customer concerns.

Entry Criteria

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

It is suitable for:

  • Heating engineers, installers, and apprentices exploring entry into the low-carbon heating sector.
  • Energy advisors, housing providers, and contractors interested in renewable heating.
  • Individuals new to low-carbon technologies and sustainable energy solutions.
    Learners should have:
  • A general interest in sustainable heating solutions.
  • Willingness to engage in discussion and visual learning.

Delivery

The course is delivered over 3.5 hours (Half Day) 6and includes:

  • Tutor-led presentations with visual demonstrations.
  • Group discussion and Q&A.
  • Case studies of real-world systems.
  • Overview of components, functionality, and system design principles.

Assessment

This is a non-assessed introductory course. Assessment is informal and based on participation and engagement.

Learners will receive a Certificate of Attendance on completion.
