This qualification is designed to enable you to:

  • Develop familiarity with the principles and practice of effective teaching to adult learners of English
  • Develop basic skills for teaching adults in the language classroom
  • Develop an awareness of language and knowledge of the English language, and how to apply these in your professional practice
  • Develop an initial understanding of the contexts within which adults learn English, their motivations and the roles of the teacher and the learner
  • Develop familiarity with appropriate resources and materials for use with adult learners of English for teaching, testing and for reference
  • Identify opportunities for your own future development as professionals in the field

Entry Criteria

  • Candidates must be 18 or over
  • You must demonstrate the ability to work effectively at undergraduate/university level
  • To work professionally as an ESOL teacher, you do not need to be a native speaker. However, you will need appropriately high levels of spoken and written English - IELTS 7/8; Level 3
  • You must be willing to work effectively within the group and to respond constructively to feedback on your personal performance
  • You must successfully complete pre-course task and an interview

Delivery

Minimum number of course hours (90 hours of input over a minimum a 130-hour programme), with 6 hours of teaching practice with learners of English.

The main course content is delivered and assessed through five units:

  • Unit 1: Teaching skills
  • Unit 2: Language awareness including grammar and phonology
  • Unit 3: Learner profile
  • Unit 4: Materials assignment
  • Unit 5: Unknown language

Assessment

A range of written and practical assignments, including journals, lesson planning, written rationale, written evaluations

Progression

The CertTESOL is accepted by the British Council as an initial TESOL or TEFL qualification in the UK and overseas. Credits are also awarded towards degree programmes offered by universities in the UK.

Holding a reputable certificate in TESOL or TEFL gives you access to many jobs in the UK and worldwide. UK broadsheets and specialist journals often feature TESOL/TEFL articles as well as advertisements for teaching posts.

COURSE DESIGN:

This TESOL course and CertTESOL qualification (Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages - CertTESOL) is a TESOL or TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English.

The CertTESOL is a practically-oriented, convenient part-time or intensive course designed to provide you with the skills and accreditation needed to teach the English language to adults in the UK or overseas. This allows you to gain this internationally recognised qualification in whichever way suits you best.

You will be working with learners from all over the world and from all kinds of backgrounds making our classes an ideal training ground for learning the fundamental skills of teaching ESOL/EFL either in the UK or overseas. It will prepare you to teach in the UK and internationally using state-of-the-art tools, such as interactive Smartboards, as well as preparing you to teach in low-tech situations.
