Course Description
This qualification aims to enable Learners to develop suitable and sufficient skills to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language on every day topics.
- Meeting people – understand simple questions, courtesies, and information
- Work/School/College – identify types of work or educational institutes, occupations or courses being studied (length of time worked or years in college)
- Using numbers (general number terms including time, age, and currency)
- Weather – discuss weather and seasonal variants
- Instructions and directions
- Opinions and ideas – facts and ideas/opinions in simple descriptive statements
- Signing structure – to be able to apply BSL sign structure to sentences
- Describing people, animals, and objects

Entry Criteria
Students are expected to have complete the Introduction to British Sign Language or demonstrate BSL skills at an equivalent level.
Delivery
Lessons will be delivered at college campuses or community venues, over 1 academic year. For remote delivery all assessments will be conducted at a college campus.
Assessment
*All assessments are conducted at approved college centres
1A1 – Receptive Skills: Students answer questions following a short story in BSL
1A2 – Descriptive Skills: Students are given a topic 4 weeks prior to the assessment date to be able to provide information in BSL during a short video assessment
1A3 – Conversation Skills: Students should be able to understand and respond to statements or questions in BSL, including fingerspelling. iBSL provide a topic for discussion shortly before the assessment begins.
Progression
Successful students will receive an iBSL certificate, and can progress to BSL Level Two
