Course Description

The level 3 Apprenticeship in Engineering is designed to provide the skills, knowledge and competence requirements to work at craft or technician level.

It allows the apprentice to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with essential and personal skills, required for their immediate job and future career.

Pathways include:

Marine Engineering
Involves maintaining and repairing ship systems and engines. Apprentices learn propulsion, hydraulics, and fuel systems, often working on vessels in dockyards or at sea.

Electrical Maintenance Engineering
This position focuses on installing, testing, and maintaining electrical systems in industrial settings. Tasks include fault-finding, wiring control panels, and ensuring compliance with safety standards.

Mechanical Maintenance Engineering
Covers servicing and repairing mechanical equipment like pumps, valves, and gearboxes. Apprentices may strip down machinery, replace worn parts, and keep systems running efficiently.

Engineering Manufacturing
Centred on producing components using tools like CNC machines. Activities include quality checks, interpreting technical drawings, and assembling products in factory environments.

Aeronautical Engineering
Deals with aircraft systems maintenance and design. Apprentices might inspect engines, fit avionics, or assist in flight testing under strict regulations.

Installation and Commissioning
Involves setting up and testing new equipment or systems at customer sites. Apprentices install machinery, calibrate instruments, and ensure systems function as specified.

Entry Criteria

  • 3 GCSE’s grade C (new equivalent grade 4) or above including Maths, English/Welsh, and one other.
  • Must have a suitable employer who can cover the NVQ criteria.

Delivery

  • Technical training is provided in the college 1 day per week, including time in practical workshops.
  • Aeronautical Engineering is available to candidates who have successfully completed the full time Level 3 BTEC Aeronautical Engineering

Assessment

  • Completion of a portfolio of evidence
  • Work based observations
  • Theory based tasks and tests

Progression

  • Higher Apprenticeship Level 4
  • HNC in Engineering
