Course Description

An apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating is a 4 ½ year course where you are employed by a Plumbing & Heating or construction company and attend college 1 day/week.

While on site with your employer you will be gaining skills and experience working on plumbing and heating jobs. At first, you will be doing low level jobs and helping qualified plumbers to do their work; but over time, you will gain experience and learn about Central Heating systems, Hot & Cold systems and Sanitary (bathroom suites and showers).

At the end of the course, you will be assessed on site doing a range of plumbing and heating jobs. This is called the “Final Practical Project” where a college assessor will visit you over a number of days to confirm your competence.

You will attend college 1 day per week throughout your apprenticeship, but the weeks at college will follow a typical academic year. College will be a mix of classroom theory and workshop practical sessions.

Theory will cover all aspects of the plumbing and heating and the construction industry. Your skills and knowledge gained at college will supplement your on-site experience. You will be required to sit up to 3 on-line multi-choice question exams and have a 45 minute Professional Discussion with an external examiner. There is only one practical assessment while at college.

Plumbing Pathways.

Plumbing & Heating apprenticeships also have specific “pathways” for you to choose, this is dependent on the type of work your employer does. There are two pathways, Gas Engineering and Environmental. If you choose the Gas Engineering pathway you will complete the necessary training and assessment to work on gas systems and be Gas Safe Registered. The Environmental pathway is for companies that specialise in Renewable Energy systems, such as Solar Hot Water, and Heat Pumps - again, you will complete the necessary training and assessment to become qualified to install these systems.
