Course Description

Are you currently working in a hair salon? Are you looking to develop your career and your technical skills? This apprenticeship course helps you to progress into top hairdressing jobs, including managerial roles, work as a demonstrator, positions in leading salons and jobs on cruise liners. It is also one of the only acceptable qualifications for work abroad, giving you even more options for success.

The course is suitable for students progressing from a relevant Level 2 qualification, or from existing professional knowledge. You must be currently employed in the industry.

Entry Criteria

  • You must be currently employed in a hairdressing salon. If not currently in a salon, we can assist in helping you find an employer
  • You should have a Level 2 hairdressing qualification, or equivalent professional knowledge
  • You must be enthusiastic, committed and willing to learn
  • You must have a calm and caring personality
  • You will be required to attend an interview

All places are subject to satisfactory interview and meeting clientele requirements

Delivery

The majority of the course is delivered in the workplace. However, Work-Based Learners will benefit from a blend of the following:

  • Theory classes
  • Practical workshops
  • Real salon environments at the college
  • Commercial sessions
  • Demonstrations
  • Role play exercises
  • Group work

Attendance at college-based sessions to complete theory tasks and tests is not essential. It is possible to complete the qualification through open distance learning. You will have to attend Essential Skills Qualifications sessions at a convenient college site, if required.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a blend of the following:

  • Electronic Portfolio of practical assessments for each unit
  • Assignments and tasks
  • Multiple-choice tests covering the underpinning knowledge (Online Exams)
  • Theory based tasks and tests
  • Work-Based Observations and Assessments
  • Your behaviour will also count towards your assessment, in terms of maturity, development, interaction and communication

Progression

The Level 3 qualification will help you progress in the right direction towards a challenging career. You will be able to seek additional responsibilities in your workplace, and may be able to work in a supervisory or managerial role. You will have a range of options for working as a stylist, in salons across the UK and in other countries.

If you want to advance further in education, you may have the option of proceeding into Higher Education on either a full-time or part-time basis. You could undertake a City and Guilds Higher Professional qualification at Grwp Llandrillo Menai, which would enhance your skills and employability even further and give you a Level 4 qualification.

Progression will be based on meeting clientele requirements for the higher level. Progression may also be available to other Barbering and Beauty Therapy Pathways.

Campus Information Work-Based Learning

Aimed at those who would like to pursue a career in Hairdressing, the Level 3 NVQ is the qualification that is accepted to work abroad, giving opportunities to become a specialist within the industry and work in one of the top careers open to a hairdresser.

This course will develop your practical experience and underpinning knowledge of Hairdressing. The qualification comprises of four mandatory units and five optional units including client consultation, dressing hair (including long hair), effective running of a Salon, Health and Safety in the Salon,

Specialised skills in haircutting, permanent waving, colouring and colour correction.

You will also study Essential Skills in Communication, Application of Number and Digital Literacy, as well as looking into the rights and responsibilities of employers.

Unit Information

To achieve the full qualification, candidates must complete 4 mandatory units totaling 43 credits and optional units to a minimum of 25 credits in order to give an overall total of 68 credits.

MANDATORY UNITS

  • Creatively style and dress hair 7 Credits (knowledge 3 competence 4)
  • Creatively cut hair using a combination of techniques 14 Credits (knowledge 6 competence 8)
  • Creatively colour and lighten hair 14 Credits (knowledge 9 competence 5)
  • Provide client consultation services 8 Credits (knowledge 5 competence 3)

OPTIONAL UNITS

  • Provide a variety of relaxing services 9 Credits (knowledge 4 competence 5)
  • Hair colour correction services 15 Credits (knowledge 8 competence 7)
  • Provide creative hair extension services 8 Credits (knowledge 3 competence 5)
  • Create a variety of permed effects 10 credits (knowledge 5 competence 5)
  • Develop, enhance and evaluate your creative hairdressing skills 9 Credits (knowledge 5 competence 4)
  • Provide specialist hair and scalp treatments 12 Credits (knowledge 8 competence 4)
  • Contribute to the planning and implementation of promotional activities 10 Credits (knowledge 7 competence 3)
  • Contribute to the financial effectiveness of the business 7 Credits (knowledge 3 competence 4)
  • Cut men’s hair using basic techniques 12 Credits (knowledge 5 competence 7)
  • Fulfill salon reception duties 6 Credits (knowledge 2 competence 4)
  • Cut men’s hairstyles 6 Credits (knowledge 2 competence 4)
