Course Description

Would you like a career with animals? Are you interested in becoming a Registered Veterinary Nurse?

Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor's Glynllifon Campus is one of the only centres in North Wales to run the Central Qualifications Level 3 course, which is approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Under the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, you cannot undertake all the duties of a fully qualified Veterinary Nurse without this qualification.

The course is suitable if you already work on the nursing side in a veterinary practice, or if you are interested in working with animals.

Some of the units covered include:

  • Operational requirements of a veterinary practice
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Animal welfare, health and husbandry
  • Infection control
  • Nursing support
  • Nursing emergency and critical care
  • Supply of medicines
  • Diagnostic skills
  • Anaesthesia
  • Laboratory
  • Operating theatre practice

Learners must also have a guaranteed work placement in an Approved Training Practice for the duration of the course. You will need a minimum of 1,800 hours practical training with a Training Provider.

Entry Criteria

  • 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including English, Mathematics and Science.
  • Other qualifications at level 2 or above may be accepted - this will be discussed at interview.
  • Places on the programme are subject to successful interview.

Delivery

The course will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Lectures, to cover the theory
  • Practical experience in a realistic working environment with a range of animals in purpose-built facilities on the Glynllifon Campus
  • Work placement and training with a designated clinical coach as an employed student Veterinary Nurse on a day release basis within a training practice

During the first two years, you will spend one day a week doing Online Distance Learning with your lecturer, attending college once a term, and three or four days a week in the practice.

During the third year, you will complete external practical exams and complete hours in practice before applying for RCVS registration.

The Glynllifon site is 750 acres of farm and woodland, with its own indoor riding centre and animal centre, allowing your studies to be carried out in a realistic setting.

Assessment

  • 6 x Assignments set by CQ and administered by Centres. Marked by the Centre according to the marking criteria set by CQ
  • 4 x Multiple Choice examinations set and administered by CQ
  • 1 x Short answer question examination set and administered by CQ
  • Completion of the work-based Central Skills Log (CSL) over 3 years

The practical skills will be assessed by:

  • Completion of the electronic work-based Central Skills Log (CSL) over 2-3 years
  • Practical exam (OSCE) consisting of 12 stations. Set and administered by CQ in a CQ approved OSCE centre, usually on a weekend.

Progression

Successful completion of the course can lead to a rewarding career and allow learners to progress into employment within the Veterinary Nursing Sector, as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.

It also allows learners to progress onto other higher level qualifications within the sector such as the BSc/FD/HND in Veterinary Nursing.

Within Veterinary Nursing, there are also opportunities to specialise in specific areas e.g. Behaviour, wound management.
