Course Description
This course is for operators who have prior formal training on a Reach or Counterbalance.
Entry Criteria
None.
Delivery
Learning through a mix of classroom-based teaching and practical exercises
Assessment
Operators are assessed on their:
- Ability to carry out a pre-use check
- Theory and understanding of the operating limits and safe working practices
- Practical Ability to operate the truck safely.
Progression
After completion of this conversion course operators can progress onto other lift trucks including industrial Telehandler.
Or progress onto off-road Telehandler for the construction and farming industries. Candidates can also progress onto NVQ courses in Warehousing and Transport

The RTITB REACH and Counterbalance Lift Trucks (often referred to as forklifts) operator training course will give you the skills to operate the truck safely and efficiently, carry out a pre-use inspection, and recall and explain the causes of truck and load instability.
This course covers, but is not limited to, the following areas;
- Lift truck controls and instruments
- Starting/moving/stopping and steering the truck
- Operation of hydraulic controls
- On/off ramp driving
- Vehicle loading and unloading
- Stacking and destacking
- Lift truck stability
- The operators’ safety code
