Course Description

This qualification formally recognises the knowledge and skills required to support the widely divergent learning needs of adults and young people by:

  • Enabling candidates to specialise in supporting the needs of learners with specific disabilities and difficulties.

The qualification consists of mandatory units which cover the core requirements of learning support, focussing on the development of good communication skills and other strategies, which enable those with additional learning needs to learn in a safe and inclusive environment. Candidates are also able to select from optional units with a particular specialism. These may be related to specific difficulties or disabilities or may concern a related topic such as supporting positive behaviour.

This qualification is appropriate for learning support assistants or equivalent in colleges of further education, community education, anyone whose key function is to provide learning support for adults and young people with additional learning needs, including learning difficulties and disabilities, or anyone who is interested in becoming a learning support assistant. The units within the qualification may also be used by others working with adults and young people with additional learning needs, wishing to enhance their own practice.
