Course Description
Already working as an electrician? Turn your experience into a recognised qualification and work toward your ECS Gold Card.
This route is designed for electricians with 5+ years’ industry experience and forms part of the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA). You will have up to 18 months to complete the qualification.
Important:
To achieve your Gold Card, you must also hold:
- AM2E (not included)
- 18th Edition (BS 7671) (not included)
- Initial Verification (Inspection & Testing) (not included)

A practical, experience-based route to gain a recognised qualification — without returning to full-time study — and take the final step toward your ECS Gold Card.
Entry Criteria
This route is for experienced electricians only — it is not suitable for apprentices or new entrants.
To enrol, you must:
- Have at least 5 years’ relevant industry experience
- Demonstrate knowledge equivalent to a Level 3 Electrotechnical apprenticeship
To get started, you’ll follow a simple process:
- Complete a skills scan to confirm your eligibility
- Enrol and build your workplace portfolio
- Attend site assessment visits
- Progress to AM2E and apply for your ECS Gold Card
If you don’t hold formal qualifications, your experience will be assessed through the skills scan.
Please note:
- The skills scan must be completed before enrolment
- This qualification is for learners aged 19+
Delivery
What you’ll cover
Prove your competence across:
- Installation and commissioning
- Health & safety and site practices
- Inspection, testing, and fault finding
- Electrical design and installation
Includes underpinning knowledge of BS 7671 and Initial Verification
(separate certification still required)
The course is a blend of theoretical learning and practical application alongside portfolio work
Assessment
Assessment is based on a portfolio of real workplace evidence, demonstrating your competence across a range of installation tasks.
You will also complete a minimum of two on-site assessment visits as part of the process.
Please note: Additional site visits, if required, may incur an extra fee.
