Môn ar Lwy

Bodorgan-based ice cream company, Môn ar Lwy has been working with Busnes@LlandrilloMenai to map its carbon footprint through the Green Digital Academy. The family business was established in 2008 and has been producing multi award winning ice cream and sorbets since. Sustainability is important to business owner Helen Holland, with their milk sourced from a dairy less than two miles from their ice creamery. Looking to the future Helen was keen to look at how she could make her business greener whilst continuing to support the local community and work with suppliers on the island.

The challenge - REACHING NET ZERO by 2030

With an increasing need to act to tackle climate change, Helen wanted to understand Môn ar Lwy’s net zero and digital priorities and how she could take action to qualify as a net zero business by 2030. “As a company our goal is to quickly adapt to increasing government net zero regulations and I’m determined not to get left behind. Working with Busnes@LlandrilloMenai has been invaluable and has helped us do this as well as take steps to meet our customers’ demand for environmentally friendly produce.”

What the experts say - TACKLING EMISSIONS
As with many production businesses, purchased goods and services make up the majority of Môn ar Lwy’s emissions; of these, packaging and ingredients are the main contributors. As expected, electricity consumption for coolers and freezers is also a significant contributor. To help the business reach net zero a review of packing is recommended with recyclable and compostable suggested as alternatives. Other recommended actions include switching to a 100% renewable electricity tariff, installing additional PV panels and for the mid to long term, making the shift to EVs for deliveries.

The outcome - A PATHWAY TO CARBON REDUCTION
Helen recognises that it will be a challenge to implement some of the recommendations, but she explains: “We are keen to make a difference and to reduce the impact of our business on climate. I have gained a real insight into what can be done and the technology we can put into practice to make Môn ar Lwy a truly sustainable and environmentally friendly business. This is the beginning of our journey and we’ve really benefited from the support and advice we have received through Green Digital Academy.”
