Course Description

The Veterinary Nursing Assistant qualification aims to prepare and support students for a career within a Veterinary Practice. It provides a progression opportunity* onto the L3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.

The course will be taught by experienced Qualified Veterinary Nurses in the context of small animals (dogs, cats, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters and other small mammals and may include reptiles, birds, turtles and tortoises).

Topics covered will include anatomy and physiology, animal health, reception duties, health & safety, infection control, animal handling and assisting with animal care.

The course will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Lectures, to cover the theory

  • Practical experience in a realistic working environment with a range of animals in purpose-built facilities on the Glynllifon Campus

  • Work placement and training with a designated clinical coach as an employed student Veterinary Nurse on a day release basis within a training practice

Entry Criteria

A minimum of three GCSE passes.

Alternative qualifications may be accepted if they are demonstrably equivalent.

Apprentices must be in paid employment at a Veterinary Clinic for a minimum of 16 hours a week.

This includes time spent in college. The candidate must spend 51 % of their employed time in Wales.

Delivery

The course will be delivered through a blend of the following:

  • Lectures, to cover the theory

  • Practical experience in a realistic working environment with a range of animals in purpose-built facilities on the Glynllifon Campus

  • Work placement and training with a designated clinical coach as an employed student Veterinary Nursing Assistant on a day release basis within a training practice

Please note: unlike the L3 course the practice does not need to be an RCVS accredited training practice for this course.

  • Externally set and marked multiple choice Exams x 2

Progression

The Veterinary Nursing Assistant Diploma is a stand-alone qualification enabling successful candidates to work as a Veterinary Nurse Assistant.

Successful completion of the course will allow learners to progress onto the L3 Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship.

*If you do not have GCSE Science at C or above you will need a Merit on this course to progress onto the L3, along with the other entry requirements.


Campus Information Glynllifon

Grwp Llandrillo Menai is Wales's largest Further Education Institution and one of the largest FE college groups in the UK. Veterinary Nurse and Veterinary Nurse Assistant training is delivered at its Glynllifon Campus in North Wales.

The Glynllifon site is 750 acres of farm and woodland, with a newly built animal centre comprising lecture/IT rooms, grooming room, laboratory and Vet Nursing practical room. This will allow your studies to be carried out in a realistic setting.
