Course Description

The Diploma is available via an apprenticeship route, which is a fully-funded programme, funded by the Welsh Government.

This programme is approximately 18-24 months in duration.

Elements of this framework include – Essential Skills Wales in Application of Number Level 2, Communication Level 2 & Digital Literacy Level 2. (Relevant GCSE proxies apply if the applicant has grades A-C GCSEs)

This qualification is accredited through the awarding body, Agored.

Potential learners must be employed as a trainee dental nurse in order to undertake this qualification.

The qualification focuses on the following topics:

  • Oral & Dental Anatomy and Physiology
  • Dental & Oral Diseases & Preventive Practice
  • Dental Treatment
  • Patient care procedures

The qualification is suitable for:

  • Unqualified dental nurses already working as dental nurses
  • Qualified but unregistered dental nurses who wish to obtain a dental nursing qualification and be registered with the GDC

Entry Criteria

You must be age 16+ and employed within a relevant industry.

Delivery

Delivery of this qualification and the ESQs attached to the framework, will be that of a typical work-based learning approach – roll-on-roll off basis.

This will be a blended learning approach that will consist of minimal college attendance and a mixture and variety of assessment methods used in order to gather evidence towards achieving this.

Assessment

This will consist of and could include, through induction, some possible online teaching sessions, observations during natural working practice in the workplace, professional discussions, assignments, workbooks, multi-choice questionnaire and a project.

Progression

This apprenticeship provides the learners with a possible progression route in other areas. Such as:

  • Advanced dental nursing training and sedation training
  • Oral Health Education
  • Dental radiography as well as other career pathways in terms of teaching, assessing, dental hygiene and dental practice management.
  • General nursing
  • Midwifery
