Course Description

This framework has been designed to provide the social care sector with higher level skilled workers and to support succession planning and progression for leaders and managers within the sector. It offers progression to experienced staff to obtain the professionally required qualification for management and leadership in social care.

In Wales, managers of residential care homes for children and adults are required to register with Care Council for Wales and from 2013 managers of services providing services will also have to register. This is a qualification based register and this framework provides the qualifications required to achieve this status. It offers progression from the Advanced Practitioner Frameworks.

There are a number of pathways:

  • Management Adult Services
  • Management of Residential Services for Adults
  • Management Child and Young People’s services
  • Management Residential Services for Children and Young People.

Entry Criteria

This qualification is practice-based for those with experience in a leadership or management role within the Health and Social Care sector, who meet additional regulatory requirements which apply to some work settings.

It is suitable for learners who:

  • are looking to demonstrate the competencies set out in the qualification as part of their work role, and who meet any work setting minimum age regulations
  • have completed an appropriate Level 4 Leadership and Management qualification, who have the opportunity to put theory into practice, and meet any additional regulatory requirements
  • Learners must be employed in a suitable role in a Health & Social care setting.
  • GCSE’s grades C or above (or equivalent grades) in English / Welsh and Maths. Learners without these grades may be required to upskill first and will need to complete Level 2 essential skills qualifications in Communication and Application of Number.
  • Learners must be at least 18 years of age to achieve this qualification.

Delivery

This qualification is practice-based for those with experience in a leadership or management role within the Health and Social Care sector and is delivered on a one to one basis in the workplace.

Assessment

Level 5 Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care: practice will be externally assessed.

Learners must successfully complete:

  • a portfolio of evidence
  • a business project
  • a professional discussion

The mandatory content of the Level 5 Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care: practice qualification consists of the following mandatory units:

  • Lead and manage person/child-centred practice
  • Lead and manage effective team performance
  • Lead and manage the quality of service provision to meet legislative, regulatory and organisational requirements
  • Professional practice
  • Lead and manage practice that promotes safeguarding of individuals
  • Lead and manage health, safety and security in the workplace/setting

A range of optional units are also available within this qualification

Progression

The qualification allows learners to progress their employment opportunities or to continue to further study at a higher level.
