Next Generation of Football Stars Shine at Urdd Tournament Hosted by Coleg Llandrillo
The 3G pitch at Coleg Llandrillo was transformed into a hub of sporting energy last week as 250 primary school children competed in the annual Urdd Conwy Open Primary School Football Tournament.
In a thrilling final, Ysgol Bod Alaw from Colwyn Bay emerged victorious, defeating Ysgol San Siôr 4–2. Both finalists have now secured their spots at the Urdd National Finals in Aberystwyth on Saturday, June 20. The individual highlight of the day went to Ezra from Ysgol Bod Alaw, who was named Player of the Tournament.
Beyond the competition, the event served as a vital hands-on learning experience for Coleg Llandrillo’s Level 2 Sport students, who refereed all of the games on the day, and helped out with timekeeping and logistics.
Riley Patterson, a Level 2 Sports student, said: "I actually took part in this event when I was younger, so to be here helping out today feels amazing. It’s great experience and even better fun to see it from the other side."
Organised by Urdd Gobaith Cymru, the tournament is for boys and girls in years 5 and 6. It is held every year on the 3G pitch at Coleg Llandrillo’s Rhos-on-Sea campus.
This year’s event saw 25 teams from primary schools across Conwy County compete in a league and knockout format.
The tournament is also a chance for children, college staff and students to practise their Welsh, whatever their level of fluency.
Marc Thomas, Sports Competitions Officer for Urdd Gobaith Cymru, added: "To hear so many children enjoying their day and using the Welsh language was a great feeling. Our collaboration with the college is invaluable; players benefit from top-quality referees, while students develop essential skills like teamwork and communication and gain experience of hosting large-scale sporting events."
Mr Price, Year 4 Teacher and Deputy Head at Ysgol San Siôr, praised the facilities: "We are always well looked after at Coleg Llandrillo. The students did a great job refereeing, and the children loved the experience. We’re all looking forward to heading to Aberystwyth now for the final."
