Coleg Menai Engineering Apprentice in the running for Apprentice of the Year at this year’s Wales Food and Drink Awards

Alister Hughes, a 17-year-old engineering apprentice at Coleg Menai, is a finalist for Apprentice of Year at the Wales Food and Drink Awards at the Building Society Arena in Swansea on 16 April.

Alister, who is completing his apprenticeship with South Caernarfon Creameries, has been nominated by his employer. He was praised for his dedication, calm approach, and pride in his work. His colleagues describe him as a real asset to the business and a brilliant ambassador for Welsh food production.

Eurfon Davies, Programme Area Manager for Engineering at Coleg Menai, said: “Alister Hughes is a great example of what dedication and ambition look like in the workplace. As a young Engineering Maintenance Apprentice working towards his Level 3 NVQ, alongside his Technical Level 3 Diploma at Coleg Menai, he consistently demonstrates a positive attitude and a strong commitment to learning.

“Supported by his employer, South Caernarfon Creameries, Alister has truly excelled and is a worthy nominee for Apprentice of the Year at the Welsh Food and Drinks Awards. He represents the college with pride and professionalism, and we wish him every success both now and in the bright future ahead.”

South Caernarfon Creameries is also a finalist for the Local Community Award at the ceremony. The farmer-owned cooperative has been recognised for its ‘From Dairy to Defibs’ fundraising initiative, aimed at providing life-saving defibrillators to rural communities. The group are passionate about supporting the areas that their farmers live and work in.

Best of luck to Alister and Caernarfon Creameries!
