Coleg Menai partners with Rolls-Royce SMR to offer first new Wylfa apprenticeships

Coleg Menai’s Llangefni campus will be the primary training hub for the first wave of apprentices working on the landmark Small Modular Reactor (SMR) project at Wylfa.

Marking the beginning of a major economic boost for north Wales, Rolls-Royce SMR is currently recruiting its first cohort of Anglesey based apprentices.

Working in the field of safety and regulation, the 10 new apprentices will gain a Level 3 Engineering qualification backed by real-world experience and in-house training. Benefitting from the college’s cutting edge facilities, expert lecturers and state-of-the-art equipment, the apprentices at Coleg Menai will play an important role in transforming the way nuclear projects are delivered using a modular ‘factory-built’ approach.

Dr Siôn Peters-Flynn, Principal of Coleg Menai, said:

“This is a really exciting time as economic growth and the job opportunities associated with large infrastructure projects such as Wylfa begin to take shape. At Coleg Menai, we are working closely with Rolls-Royce SMR and Great British Energy – Nuclear to train the people of North Wales to be part of the next generation nuclear workforce”

He added: “With our world-class facilities and expert staff, we are perfectly positioned to ensure the future workforce at Wylfa is trained to the highest standards. This is hopefully the beginning of a new era of economic growth and high-skilled employment for our communities”
