15 New Apprentices Begin Careers as Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor Expands Gwynedd South Construction Pathways
Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor is celebrating the return of key construction apprenticeship pathways, marking an important milestone for work-based learning opportunities in Gwynedd South.
For the first time in more than three years, apprenticeships in Plumbing, Plastering and Brickwork are once again being offered at the college's Dolgellau campus, providing local learners with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience while developing the practical skills needed for successful careers in the construction sector.
The department has also launched a Building Maintenance Apprenticeship in partnership with Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri (Eryri National Park Authority). Two apprentices have enrolled on the programme and are gaining hands-on experience through employment with the Authority alongside placements with local subcontractors, creating a broad and varied learning experience.
The expanded apprenticeship offer comes in direct response to increasing demand from young people and employers across Gwynedd South and reflects the college's commitment to providing local people with accessible routes into rewarding careers.
Alongside the reintroduction of these pathways and the partnership with Eryri National Park, Carpentry and Joinery continues to be a key part of the college's apprenticeship provision, maintaining a strong tradition of supporting learners and local employers alike.
Iestyn Worth, Programme Area Manager for Construction and Engineering at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, said:
"I am incredibly proud of our staff and the determination they have shown in bringing these apprenticeship pathways back to Dolgellau and the wider Gwynedd South area. This is about far more than delivering courses; it is about creating opportunities for young people, supporting local employers and strengthening the communities we serve.
"The return of Plumbing, Plastering and Brickwork apprenticeships is a significant achievement and demonstrates our commitment to responding to local needs. We are delighted to welcome 15 apprentices this September and look forward to supporting them as they develop the skills, confidence and experience needed to build successful careers in the construction industry.
Fflur Rees Jones, Assistant Principal, added:
"I am delighted that young people in our communities once again have access to these valuable work-based learning opportunities through Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor. Restoring and expanding apprenticeship provision has been something I have been passionate about, and it is wonderful to see these opportunities available once more.
"Apprenticeships provide an excellent foundation for long-term career success, allowing learners to earn, learn and gain real industry experience at the same time. I look forward to seeing each apprentice flourish, achieve their goals and make a positive contribution to the industries and communities they will go on to serve."
The development of the college's construction apprenticeship offer highlights Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor's ongoing commitment to supporting skills development, meeting regional workforce needs and creating clear pathways into employment for learners across Gwynedd South.
