Former student Eva Voma stayed to teach the next generation of engineers
Being a student at Coleg Menai is so rewarding, some students simply choose to stick around! From industry innovator to classroom inspiration, Engineering Lecturer Eva Voma shares her journey to teaching.
Eva’s story with Coleg Menai began as a student when she completed a Level 3 Diploma and Higher National Certificate in Engineering.
Before stepping back into the classroom three years ago, Eva had gained valuable hands-on experience in the engineering sector. She completed a degree apprenticeship with the college, working at International Safety Components in Llandygai.
Graduating with a 1st class degree in Applied Mechanical Systems, awarded by Bangor University, Eva’s desire to help others grow ultimately drew her toward education.
"I think teaching suits my personality," Eva said. "I enjoy passing on information to others and helping them to develop as people."
Now teaching full-time at the Llangefni campus, Eva reflects on her path from industry to the classroom, the joy of "lightbulb moments," and her top tips for the new intake of students starting this September.
Celebrating the small wins and big career steps
For Eva, the most rewarding part of working in further education (FE) is seeing her students succeed beyond the classroom.
"The best part of teaching FE particularly is that you often see students progress into work and apprenticeships quite soon after their course," she explains. "It's lovely to see them placed in industry. That's the goal, isn't it?"
It’s not just the big career leaps that make the job worthwhile, though. It’s also the daily connections with her students.
"My favourite times are simply when a lesson ends with lots of smiles, laughter, and 'thank you's, the lightbulb moments when someone grasps a concept, or the times when students warm up to you."
Eva’s Top Advice for New Students Starting This September
With a new academic year just around the corner, Eva shares her top three pieces of advice for anyone joining Coleg Menai this autumn:
Go the extra mile: "Join competitions, speak with employers, submit work beyond the bare minimum. You'll feel better in yourself and also open doors to career opportunities. You want to stand out from the crowd."
Manage your time wisely: "Move deadlines 'closer' in your mind—often, you don't have as much time as you think you do!"
Reach out when you need to: "Don't be afraid to ask questions or seek support—the staff are here to help you in any way we can!"
