Coleg Menai Lecturer Officiated WXV World Series Fixtures as a Foul Play Review Officer

Coleg Menai Sports Lecturer Jenny Davies was appointed as Foul Play Review Officer (FPRO) for two international women’s rugby games, as part of the WXV World Series fixtures.

Jenny, who teaches at the Llangefni campus, was selected as FPRO for the Scotland v Canada match on Saturday 12 September and reprised her role on 20 September as Ireland took on the USA.

Jenny started refereeing in 2018, and some of the destinations her career has taken her to so far include the Principality Stadium in Cardiff and Spain to officiate an international women’s match between Spain and Portugal.

This led to her being selected by World Rugby as both a Television Match Official and FPRO this year, followed by the call from the WXV World Series – an international women's rugby union programme that sees the top 12 ranked national teams in the world go head to head in both home and away matches.

“This is another fantastic opportunity and an exciting next step in my officiating career,” said Jenny.

It was a chance to learn valuable lessons and it also helped Jenny develop key skills.

"I have become much more comfortable remaining calm and composed in high pressure situations and have learned to be comfortable with being uncomfortable,” she said.

“It has also given me the opportunity to work alongside elite individuals who share the same drive, ambition and passion that I have,” she continued.

“I have found this both refreshing and motivating, as everyone is striving to be the best they can be and wants to contribute to delivering success.”

The elite high pressure environment of the WXV World Series reminded Jenny of how much she enjoys being challenged at this level.

“It has stirred a desire to continue developing, testing myself and finding opportunities where I can perform under pressure, contribute to a high performing team and continue striving for excellence,” she explained.

Jenny has some valuable advice for students interested in coming to study sport at the college:

“Choosing the right course is important, as it should support your future ambitions and career goals.

“College is a great opportunity to meet new people, build confidence and surround yourself with others who have similar goals and ambitions. It also gives you greater independence and responsibility.

“Be prepared to work hard, make the most of every opportunity and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Most importantly, enjoy the experience and use it to develop both personally and professionally.”

Congratulations Jenny, what a fantastic experience and we are sure there will be many more exciting opportunities in the future.
