Building bright futures: Coleg Llandrillo celebrates Junior Apprenticeship success

From "addictive" skills to new career paths, learners celebrate completing their Junior Apprenticeship at Coleg Llandrillo.

Coleg Llandrillo held its first-ever Junior Apprenticeships end-of-year awards ceremony this week. The young learners studying this year’s programme celebrated their achievements with their families and tutors.

Coleg Llandrillo’s Principal, Paul Flanagan, presented each learner with a certificate and congratulated them on their outstanding performances during their studies.

The programme combines core subjects with construction mixed trades. The 2026 graduates had the opportunity to come and study for an Extended Certificate in Construction Skills at Coleg Llandrillo with the benefit of still being able to achieve other subjects, such as maths and English.

Throughout their Junior Apprenticeship, the learners gained hands-on practical skills in industry-standard workshops, giving them the chance to build confidence, form new friendships, and explore the different options and pathways available to them at college.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Carwynn, Luke, Jordan, Noah and Cheski back to Coleg Llandrillo in September as they continue their studies with us on full-time courses, and we wish Rhys and Frankie all the best as they pursue careers in industry.

“I’ve learnt so many new skills,” said Cheski. “It’s addictive doing construction. I want to do more of it! I’ve applied to come back and do plumbing and electrical next year.”

Jordan added, “This has opened up a lot of opportunities for me. I now know what I want to do in the future, and I’m looking forward to coming back to college to do bricklaying full-time.”

Coleg Llandrillo Principal Paul Flanagan said: “These awards highlight the importance and impact of our Junior Apprenticeship programme for learners and their families. We are proud to be providing these learners with the opportunity to build a strong foundation here at Coleg Llandrillo, enabling them to progress to full-time study and train for professional careers, ultimately becoming the skilled workforce of the future.

“Today was a fantastic opportunity to recognise and celebrate the hard work and success of our Junior Apprenticeship learners in front of their families and tutors.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated staff, whose support and commitment make these achievements possible.”

There are upcoming Junior Apprenticeship initiatives for young people in Years 10 and 11 across Conwy and Denbighshire. We encourage any pupils or parents who think this could be for you to ask your school for more information.

A big congratulations to all of our 2025/2026 Junior Apprenticeship learners.
