Former Engineering Student Cruises to Success
Former Coleg Llandrillo student Harry Windsor shares how his course led to a career at sea.
Learners at Coleg Llandrillo’s Marine Engineering department recently got to find out more about the career paths available to them after their studies, when they met former student Harry Windsor.
Harry completed a Level 2 Marine Engineering course at the college in 2023. Now, just turned 20, he is sailing the high seas, working as a Cadet with Disney Cruises. The most recent ship he worked on was aptly named, The Dream.
Working on a cadet ship, a suggestion made by his tutors, was not Harry’s first choice, as he initially wanted to work in farm engineering. However, he’s now glad that he gave it a go!
“Working on the ship really opened my eyes to what’s possible,” said Harry.
Having now gained his sea legs, Harry aims to qualify as a 3rd engineer by next year. His ultimate goal is to one day become a Chief Engineer and work on super yachts. He talked to current students about his career, stressing that his time at Coleg Llandrillo provided him with the principles of engineering that he now uses on the cruise ships.
He has been able to tap into the transferable skills that he learnt here, giving him an advantage in his role, particularly during the interview process.
He left the students with a simple but key piece of advice: “Learn as much as you can.”
Encouraging them to make the most of the many opportunities available to them at Coleg Llandrillo, including work experience, hands on learning and tutors who have themselves worked in the industry.
Harry’s former tutors emphasised that there are a wide range of career paths in Marine Engineering and job opportunities are plentiful.
