Coleg Menai celebrates the achievements of this year’s supported interns
Coleg Menai celebrated the achievements of its supported interns recently with an awards ceremony at the college’s Bangor campus.
The eight interns at the celebration have spent the past year gaining valuable work experience at Ysbyty Gwynedd, spending four days a week on placement and one day in college.
As part of their development, each intern was set individual targets to help build their communication and employability skills.
The supported internship programme began in 2017, as a partnership between the Coleg Menai, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and Agoriad.
It’s a programme that gives young people real-life work experience, helping to prepare them for paid employment and the world of work.
The students organised their own travel, managed their time, and got used to the routines and responsibilities of everyday working life.
“I and everybody else can confidently say that every single intern has contributed enormously to today’s celebration and truly deserves recognition for their hard work, and commitment,” said Coleg Menai Tutor Awena Pritchard-Roberts.
The internship programme has had a profound effect on the eight students, who have all grown tremendously in confidence and skills, becoming independent workers. They are all ready to take their next steps and are progressing to some exciting destinations:
The confidence and skills Ava has developed have secured a paid bank clerical position at Ysbyty Gwynedd.
Elliott impressed the Conwy team so much they have asked him to remain with them as a Robin volunteer.
Harvey’s hard work has helped him secure a place at Coleg Meiron-Dwyfor to study Level 1 Business Administration.
Nathan found his perfect fit working with the estates team, who appreciated his positive attitude, his humour and his willingness to get on with any task that needed to be completed. Nathan is now deciding what training programme he wants to progress to.
Sophie’s passion for catering has secured her an offer of paid employment within the hospital’s catering department.
Peter became a valued member of every team he worked with and has made fabulous progress this year both personally and professionally. With newfound confidence and independence we are sure he has a bright future ahead.
Abbey was a fantastic addition to the housekeeping department, playing an important role in maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming environment for staff and patients, and developing valuable workplace skills along the way.
Dylan’s positive attitude, reliability and willingness to undertake any task that was required of him has secured him a volunteering opportunity with Caernarfon Town Football Club starting in August.
A fantastic well done to Ava, Elliott, Harvey, Nathan, Sophie, Peter, Abbey and Dylan. We are incredibly proud of everything you have accomplished over the past year and we wish you every success for the future!
