From Level 2 student to lecturer: Craig Roberts’ full-circle journey at Coleg Menai

Craig’s passion for media started long before he stepped into a classroom. Growing up, some of his favourite memories involved watching films and playing video games with his dad. When it came time to choose a path, enrolling on the Level 2 Media course at Coleg Menai felt like a natural fit.

"When I was younger, the thing I enjoyed most about media was that I got to be creative," said Craig. "I got to use the cameras, do a bit of Photoshop, and just have fun. At that age, enjoying myself was what mattered most."

Building skills and unlocking confidence

For Craig, the course offered far more than just technical knowledge; it was a transformative personal experience. Guided by passionate lecturers like Robin Abbas and Richard Williams, who still teaches at the college today, Craig developed the skills and self-assurance needed to take his passion to the next level.

"If I had to pick one huge thing I took from my time as a student, it would definitely be confidence," added Craig. "My confidence grew massively when I joined the course. My tutors taught me everything I know and made sure I loved every minute here."

After completing his studies at Coleg Menai, Craig progressed to Bangor University, where he earned a degree in Film and TV.

Stepping Into the classroom

Knowing he wanted to give back to the environment that helped him thrive, Craig returned to Coleg Menai as a Teaching Assistant. Determined to step into a lecturing role, he completed his PGCE, honed his craft, and waited for the right moment. When a lecturing position opened up, his hard work paid off.

Now, as a full-time lecturer at the Llangefni campus, Craig teaches in an environment that has evolved dramatically since his days as a student.

"We made amazing films back then, but we are in a very privileged position now," Craig explained. "We have state-of-the-art, industry-leading facilities. Our current students are getting the absolute best opportunity they could possibly get to prepare for the industry."

Looking to the future

Reflecting on his journey, Craig hopes his story proves that with the right environment and support, any student can build a rewarding career in the creative industries.

"If you’d told me back when I was on Level 2 that I’d become a lecturer here one day, I would never have believed you," continued Craig. "So, who knows what could happen? If you are a creative individual who loves films and media, this is the right place for you. Come and join us."
