From Glynllifon student to Forestry Lecturer
At Grŵp Llandrillo Menai’s Glynllifon campus, learning isn't just about textbooks – it’s about hands-on experience, industry connection, and a lifelong passion for the great outdoors. Nobody embodies this spirit better than Forestry lecturer Finlay (Fin) Wilson.
Having originally walked the grounds of Glynllifon as a Forestry & Countryside Management student, Fin has taken his education, expanded it across universities and industry, and returned to where it all began to inspire the next generation of land managers.
Fin’s pathway is a shining example of where a course at Glynllifon can lead. After completing his initial studies at the college, he progressed to higher education, studying at both the University of Gloucestershire and Bangor University.
Equipped with high-level academic training, Fin put his skills to work in the field, spending nearly two years working directly in the land management industry. But the call of Glynllifon was never far away.
Fin said: "Glynllifon has always been a special place to me. It is a privilege to be back."
Fin rejoined the college in September 2025, this time as a lecturer, while undertaking his PGCE teacher training to further refine his skills in the classroom and the field.
For Fin, stepping into teaching was the natural next step. It offered the ideal blend of practical industry experience and personal interaction.
"I was drawn to teaching as I am a people person and I am passionate about my subject. Having the opportunity to teach people about forestry and land management has given me the best of both worlds," continued Fin.
What makes further education (FE) stand out to Fin is the vibrant community of dedicated staff and motivated learners who share a common goal.
He explained: "The best thing about teaching in FE is that you work with like-minded staff and students who are also very passionate about their subjects."
I believe that this is what makes the college a special place, as it can have such a significant impact on the lives of young people and adults. I have enjoyed watching the learners grow throughout the course as people, gaining valuable skills and making new friends along the way."
To anyone considering starting their journey at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor this coming September, Fin offers straightforward, practical wisdom:
"Take every opportunity that comes your way. Make the most out of your courses. September to June seems like a long time, but it will absolutely fly by."
