Grand slam football stars honoured with International Caps and medals at Port Talbot ceremony
Six Grŵp Llandrillo Menai football players and their team manager have officially received their honors following their Centenary Shield grand slam victory with the Welsh Schools U18 team earlier this year.
At a special awards ceremony held at the Blancos Hotel in Port Talbot, the rising stars were presented with their official commemorative Welsh Schools FA International Caps, shirts, and Centenary Shield winner’s medals.
Adding to the celebration, Osian Morris from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor was named the Welsh Schools FA Staff Player of the Season.
Earlier this season, the Welsh Schools U18 side claimed a “Grand Slam" by winning every fixture in the SAFIB Centenary Shield competition, securing the trophy for Wales for the third time in five years.
The squad featured a strong Grŵp Llandrillo Menai presence, making up a third of the national team lineup.
Team Manager and Coleg Menai Tutor/Football Coach, Marc Lloyd Williams said: “It’s a remarkable achievement by all of the students.
“To have a third of the squad from Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is a testament to the pathway we provide within the Grŵp for students to combine their education with elite sport.
“I can’t thank all the lads enough for all their effort and the dedication they have shown over the season.”
In the final fixture at Llandudno Football Club, Wales defeated a strong Republic of Ireland side 3-1. The Grŵp Llandrillo Menai students were at the heart of the action, with Charlie Griffith powering home the opening goal early in the match and Owen Roberts netting a crucial second-half winner to break a 1–1 deadlock.
Congratulations to Sam Parry (Level 3 Sport) from Coleg Llandrillo; Cai Roberts (Level 3 Sport), and Deian Andrews (Engineering and Construction), from Coleg Menai; and Charlie Griffith (Level 3 Sport), Osian Morris (Level 3 Engineering) and Owen Roberts (Level 3 Sport) from Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor.
