Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's state-of-the-art Hospitality departments were recently awarded an 'Excellent' rating by Estyn, her Majesty's inspectorate for Education and Training in Wales.
Estyn inspectors praised the "innovative opportunities for learners to participate in a range of international skills and employability projects" along with the opportunities for "learners to gain highly valuable work-related experience in a professional environment".
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai is also a recipient of a 'Queens Diamond Jubilee Anniversary Award', which was presented to college representatives at Buckingham Palace for "delivering world-class education in hospitality and catering at every level of study". Last year marked the 50th anniversary since Coleg Llandrillo offered its first higher education course in Rhos-on-Sea: HND Hospitality.
The college group's Hospitality programme area is the only one in Wales to offer full and part-time courses from Level 1 to Bachelor Honours Degrees in Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts, as well as Apprenticeships, NVQs and customised employee training. These specialist programmes provide you with expertise, a recognised qualification and the opportunity to enter organisations of culinary and gastronomic innovation.
For those learners wishing to pit their skills against their peers from across the UK, tutors and chefs with decades of experience at the top level afford students the opportunity to be selected to participate in the Welsh International Culinary Championships, which sees most of the nation's top culinary competitions brought together in one venue.
Over the years, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai learners have achieved significant successes at the championships, scooping scores of gold medals. Learners will also get the opportunity to participate in a wide range of other national and international competitions, including Skills Competition Wales, Torque Dôr, Seafish and WorldSkills.
The outstanding training kitchens and restaurants provide first-class facilities for learner of all levels to hone their technical and personal skills and enable them to progress to employment in all areas of the Hospitality industry. Courses are delivered by an expert team of experienced tutors / chefs with global experience…some of whom were former Grŵp Llandrillo Menai students themselves!
Grŵp Llandrillo Menai's Hospitality departments are proud of their glittering alumni. In recent years, ex-student chefs have excelled within their burgeoning careers: one is currently working alongside culinary pioneer Heston Blumenthal, several are head chefs in Michelin-starred restaurants, and quite a few have starred on the hit TV series 'The Great British Menu'.
One of the latter, celebrity cook and chef to the Queen, Bryn Williams, learnt his trade at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus. Bryn, who is originally from Denbigh, is now head chef and sole proprietor of Odette's Restaurant in London. In June 2015 he opened his new bistro, Bryn@Porth Eirias, on the sea shore in Colwyn Bay…just a stone's throw from the college campus where he trained!
Another success story from the 'The Great British Menu' involved Hywel Griffith, a former Hospitality and Catering student from Coleg Menai, being chosen to represent Wales in the final of the BBC's hit cookery competition. Hywel is head chef and director at the Michelin-starred Beach House Restaurant on the Gower Peninsula.
Obtaining experience in a real-work environment is also a key consideration. As well as having full access to the industry standard, in-house training facilities, local, national and pan-European work placements provide opportunities for learners to develop crucial employability skills.
The UK hospitality industry accounts for nearly ten per cent of UK jobs, making it the third largest industry by employment in the UK, employing 3.2 million people directly.**
