The parents of a former Coleg Menai Engineering student and the college will soon be introducing a Remembrance Award for the student who has made significant progress in Automotive Engineering.
Former student of Coleg Menai Llangefni, Rhun Jones, sadly passed away in February 2020 following a tragic car accident. To honour the memory of Rhun, his parents have pledged to award the Gryffudd Rhun Jones Shield for the next ten years, along with a £100 prize, to a deserving learner on the Automotive Engineering courses offered at Coleg Menai.
Rhun was a student at Coleg Menai for a period of five years, where he successfully completed a Level 3 Automotive Engineering Apprenticeship between 2012 and 2015. He completed his Apprenticeship programme through the support of his employer of seven years, Iolo Evans at Glanafon Garage, Abersoch. More recently, Rhun worked at North Wales Rally Services with his uncle, Robin.
Linda Jones, Rhun's mother, explained, "Rhun thoroughly enjoyed his time at Coleg Menai and continued to work as a car mechanic after his time at college. We as a family couldn't have been prouder of Rhun, and we hope that this Award will provide other deserving learners a great opportunity."
Aled Jones-Griffith, Principal of Coleg Menai, added, "Coleg Menai is proud to be able to remember Rhun in such a positive light. Rhun was extremely talented and he was a real asset to our college, having made many friends here and kept in touch with his tutors."
