Grŵp Llandrillo Menai has partnered with Coleg Cymraeg Cymru to offer an incentive scholarship scheme for students hoping to study Higher Education in Welsh.

From this summer, level 4 and 6 students hoping to study through the medium of Welsh can now apply for a scholarship on the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol's website. The scholarship gives £1,500 over 3 years, aiming to incentivise students to consider continuing their studies in Welsh. In addition to this, Welsh speaking students can also apply for the GLlM bursary of £300 per year for engaging with at least 33% through the medium of Welsh on their programmes with their Welsh speaking tutors.

Nan Mererid Tudor, who studies the Health and Social Care Foundation Degree at Dolgellau said:

For me, one of the most important things about doing my work through the medium of Welsh that will enable me to work with confidence is the fact that I can communicate in writing and orally at a much more professional and fluent level. As a recipient of this scholarship, it has encouraged me to complete all my work through the medium of Welsh, which has enabled me to use my linguistic skills further, as well as learn new terminology in Welsh.

The programmes included in this scheme are the BA/FdA Business Management, BA/FdA Health and Social Care, and FdSc Sports Science (Outdoor Activities) at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, the BSc Policing and Investigating Crime (only available for the next academic year), and BSc/FdSc Sports Science (Sports Coaching) at Coleg Llandrillo .

Students applying for the scheme are required to commit to engaging with at least 33% of their chosen programme through the medium of Welsh. This could include group work projects, home-work, discussions, and class activities. To apply for the Incentive Scholarship, students would need to visit the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol website where they can access a range of guidance, support and resources.

Joanne Owen, Higher Education Development Manager at Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, has been working with partners at Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. Commenting on the scholarship, she said,

We are proud to offer a range of bilingual Higher Education courses supported by Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, which now includes the access to their Incentive Scholarship scheme, and have been delighted to see an increased uptake of these courses in support of the Welsh language standards. We are very proud to be able to offer a wide range of degrees to our students, as many choose to study locally, rather than moving away to University, enabling them to study around work and personal commitments. It is truly an honour to be able to support our students to move forward in challenging themselves to gain a degree and work locally.
